DwaneEarlier we talked about the process equation, Y = f(X). A Y to X tree is a tool to help you drill into the details of an objective to determine what the Xs might be at a granular level. In this example, we will use one of our HR LRP priorities, “Apply Lean / Six Sigma principles to achieve greater process excellence.” By itself, that encompasses a lot of things, and would be nearly impossible to attempt. By drilling down a little, we can identify actionable tasks and deliverables. You can see here that we start with the goal itself at the top. We then drill that down into the key components or measures that make up the goal. In this example, we have selected three keys to success, LSS metrics, LSS Champion Certification and LSS Deployment Sessions. We then take each of these and drill them down further. In this case, we have gone to the next level on LSS deployment sessions. You can follow the path by looking at the boxes in green. We have identified LSS Return on investment, Belt certifications, number of projects completed and a tracking mechanism as either key indicators or required components of a successful program.
