How do we define ‘physical disability’ ?
Physical disability
A physical disability is when an individual finds mobility
challenging, or they may need to use assistance to get
around. They may need a carer to support them to get
around and move from place to place. They may have fine
motor or gross motor challenges.
Have you met any objectives?
In small groups of research the
following disabilities.

Muscular Dystrophy
Parkinsons Disease
Charge Syndrome 20mins
You will be presenting your findings to the class
5 minute presentations per group
What causes a Physical Disability?
Congenital disability
Progressive disability
Acquired disability
What you think each of these terms might mean.
What causes a Physical Disability?
Congenital disability – This means that the physical disability
was present at birth. This could also be a genetic syndrome.
Progressive disability – This is a disability that gets diagnosed
and you may deteriorate over a period of time. For example
- muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis
Acquired disability – This is a disability that is sudden – for
example, paralysis because of an RTA or a soldier injured in
battle. Or as a result of a stroke.
