1. BIRD STRIKE ANALYSIS IN UNITED STATES

To find states that have the highest incidence of bird strikes.
To identify airports that incur the most cost attributed to bird strikes.
PROJECT GOALS
To find the overall trend of bird strikes on aircraft over time.
2. STATES THAT HAVE THE HIGHEST BIRD COLLISIONS AND
HIGHEST COST INCURRED TO REPAIR THE AIRCRAFTS
• New York and California incurred the highest cost of repairs to the aircrafts.
• New York incurred a greater cost of repair to airplane with fewer number of bird collision as compared to
California.
• In every state at least half of the total bird strikes were attributed to small birds as compared to any other
bird size. Except in Tennessee, where medium size birds contributed to the most bird strikes.
3. TREND OF BIRD STRIKES ON AIRCRAFT
There has been an upward trend from 2000 to 2011 in
single bird collisions, with an average yearly growth of
5.18%. We analyzed the trend of bird collisions over 12
years and visualized a steep upward jump in 2008 with
6,665 collisions to 8,318 bird collisions in 2009.
4. TOP 8 AIRPORTS WITH THE HIGHEST BIRD COLLISIONS
AND HIGHEST COST INCURRED TO REPAIR THE AIRCRAFT
• Denver International Airport
has the most bird collisions,
2,942 birds and incurred the
highest cost.
• The largest inconsistency here
is the higher the number of bird
strikes does not always correlate
with total cost.
• For example Denver has 700
more strikes then Dallas and has
over $19 million more in repair
costs.
