Notas do Editor
Chair,
Thailand is delivering the statement on behalf of ASP. In ASP successful meeting during 25-26 May in Beijing China, Thailand has proposed and received fully support on establishing the World Soil Day Award. The propose of the Award is that Thailand, in cooperation with FAO, will provide the World Soil Day Award annually on the 5th of December in honor of His Majesty the Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
This award is a follow up to the World Soil Day and International Year of Soil as approved by the United Nations and held annually on His Majesty the Late King Birthday (December 5th) as a mean to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. The aim of this award is to support and encourage all levels of stakeholders to engage sustainable soil management to ensure healthy and fertile soils for the food production and to warrant food security to fight against hunger.
The World Soil Day Award will honor individuals, communities, organizations, countries who implement the outstanding World Soil Day campaigns. The campaign should be linked to the topic of the WSD celebration and contribute to raise an awareness on the importance of soils, capacity development on soils, advocacy for sustainable soil management, and supporting the implementation of sustainable soil management.
A brief description of the process involved in selecting the World Soil Day Award Laureate include 4 steps; starting from nomination forms will be sent out to the GSP partners during June and the deadline for submission will be by end of September. Thus, the committees which include 8 chairs of Regional Soil Partnerships will have a couple of months during October and November to select the Laureate, and at the middle of November, the name of the World Soil Day Laureate will then be announced. Finally, World Soil Day Laureate receives the Award on the 5th of December in Bangkok Thailand. For the prize of the award, Thailand will provide a financial support, consisting of World Soil Day Medal, and Cash prize. The laureate will present or share the experience in the outstanding achievement in the auditorium of the World Soil Day Cerebration.
In this regard, we would like to hear your advice. As the 4th ASP meeting resolution in Beijing endorsed the establishment of the Award and agreed to deliver the first award on the 5th of December 2018. Therefore, we request for GSP’s decision in the endorsement of the establishment of the World Soil Day Award, so that we can present the award on the 5th of December this year in Thailand as planned.
Thank you Chair.
