Who is Konstantin Dmietrevich Glinka?
K.D. Glinka, the World Soil Prize award, Scope and Objectives, Potential Candidates
THE GLINKA WORLD SOIL PRIZE
Glinka was a soviet soil
scientist, credited
for his contribution to
understanding
the geographical
distribution of soils.
The Prize is named after
him to honor the Russian
school for its study of soil.
The award contributes:
• to raise awareness amongst policy makers and the
general public about possible solutions to tackle
national and local problems of soil degradation
• to encourage all stakeholders and soil practitioners
to engage in field-oriented work, with direct contri
butions to the preservation of the environment,
food security and poverty alleviation as specified
in the Revised World Soil Charter .
About the Glinka World Soil Prize
• Nominees can be individuals or organizations;
• They should have made outstanding achievements in implementing
the principles and recommended actions of:
o The revised World Soil Charter (FAO 2015)
o The Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management
(FAO, 2016);
o The Status of World Soil Resources (FAO 2015)
• Their achievements should contribute to one of the five pillars of the
GSP;
• A proven impact at field level will be an added value.
Who can apply?
• GSP Partners are invited to nominate candidates, either directly or
on behalf of a third party;
• You can contact the Secretariat and reach out to GSP partners in your
countries who will pre-screen your candidature;
• Self-nominations are not allowed and will be disqualified
How to apply?
Once completed, the form should be submitted to:
Nominations can be submitted in English, French,
Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Chinese;

  • 4. K.D. Glinka, the World Soil Prize award, Scope and Objectives, Potential Candidates THE GLINKA WORLD SOIL PRIZE Glinka was a soviet soil scientist, credited for his contribution to understanding the geographical distribution of soils. The Prize is named after him to honor the Russian school for its study of soil.

The award contributes: • to raise awareness amongst policy makers and the general public about possible solutions to tackle national and local problems of soil degradation • to encourage all stakeholders and soil practitioners to engage in field-oriented work, with direct contri butions to the preservation of the environment, food security and poverty alleviation as specified in the Revised World Soil Charter . About the Glinka World Soil Prize
  • 6. • Nominees can be individuals or organizations; • They should have made outstanding achievements in implementing the principles and recommended actions of: o The revised World Soil Charter (FAO 2015) o The Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (FAO, 2016); o The Status of World Soil Resources (FAO 2015) • Their achievements should contribute to one of the five pillars of the GSP; • A proven impact at field level will be an added value.   1. Good afternoon, I’m Giulia Stanco from the Communication Unit of the GSP Secretariat and I’m presenting item 6 on the Plenary Agenda: the Glinka World Soil Prize

  3. Financially supported by the Russian Federation.. Established 2016 - 2018
  4. The Glinka World Soil Prize, named after the pioneering Russian scientist and academic of the Russian Academy of Sciences Konstantin D. Glinka, was established by the Global Soil Partnership with the support of the Russian Federation since 2016. The Prize is named after him because of the outstanding contributions he has made and to honor the Russian school for its study of soils
  5. Under Pillar 2 Why? 1. In order to stimulate engagement of national and international stakeholders ( to tackle acute soil-related issues) 2. to showcase positive examples of technologically-advanced and field-oriented work, the World Soil Champin pointing to innovation also
  6. Prize honors individual a/o organization hose activities and leadership are contributing to.. for exceptional achievements consistent to one of the five GSP Pillars, in particular the promotion of sustainable soil management and the protection of soil resources. First of all the SSM, and the protection of soil resources as specified in the revised WSC, the status of World Soil Resources and the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management. Last but not least, the well-being of population: Its result must have a proven positive impact at field level.
  7. How to apply
  8. It comes in the form of the Glinka Medal and a sum of USD 15.000. Deadlines.. The new call for nomination for the 2018 edition will be issued at the end of June and a good response by our partners is expected. This is the last year we are promoting Glinka with the support of Russian Federation. What about the nomination and award process?
  9. Applications were reviewed to assess compliance with established criteria set out in the call. 12 nominations were deemed to comply with Prize specifications (mid September). The Glinka WSD Selection Committee assessed the candidates shortlisted by the Secretariat, assisted by an evaluation tool developed by the Secretariat itself.
  10. Promoted through a dedicated webpage, the use of social media, the design of an ad-hoc logo and medal, through newsletter, 1 Flickr photo-gallery and press release/ highlight. A short video was also released on the occasion of WSD2017 on the GSP youtube Channel.
  11. The second Glinka World Soil Prize was awarded to the  Asociación Argentina de Productores en Siembra Directa (AAPRESID). Pedro Vigneau AAPRESID, “sustenabilidad sin frontiera” from Argentina made a clear contribution in the dissemination of sustainable soil practices in the region and beyond. It s an open network of innovative agricultural farmers exceptionally receptive to science and to technological advances. Aapresid was created 30 years ago to fight against the high rates of erosion caused by conventional tilling practices by adopting practices from Conservation Agriculture.   12. The winner, we call him Laureate, was highly recommended to attend the awarding ceremony, during WSD2017 on the 5th of December and was given the opportunity to deliver a keynote address.. Media coverage was assured in connection with WSD (Rome official event in FAO was webcasted and it’s available in streaming)
  13. During WSD Rome event, Mr Da Silva handed the Prize to the Director of the Geographical Institute Augustin Codazzi, also called IGAC, Mr De Nieto. IGAC is responsible for basic carthographic material of Colombia, soil data, information repository and for its key role in developing capacity on soil survey in Latin America (through trainings). IGAC was prized for its recent publication – Soils and Lands of Colombia, an outstanding effort made in less than 3 years to photograph the morphology and the economic and social relevance of soils in the country
  14. Due attention will be paid over the years to ensure appropriate balance among laureates with regard to gender, geographical regions and of course main soil disciplines. We would like to implement a map covering Glinka nominees and winners…
  15. This is the last year we will have the Glinka / New Ideas, new communication for the largest outreach possible, a brand new webpage for the 2018 grand challenge! Increase the engagement! We would like that Glinka becomes one of the key awareness raising platform. In order to confirm the momentum generated by the IYS2015 and to showcase examples of direct contribution to the preservation of the environment, food security and poverty alleviation… For the PA: 1. For the moment we can take note of the successful inception of the Glinka and the foreseen progress for the 2018 edition. 2. We also would like to kindly invite our partners to disseminate the call in order to assure that the process is inclusive and submissions come from different regional partnerships. 3. We would also invite resources partners to financially contribute to the implementation of this initiative beyond 2019 since Russia will sponsor it for a limited period (2016-2019) and we would like it to continue.
