5. Why Study Perception ? 🤔
Understanding how you perceive the world
◦ Language processing
◦ Color vision
Multitasking and attention
Mindfulness
Rehabilitation Counseling
◦ Devices to assist people with vision and hearing losses
6. Each individual has his or her
own perception of reality. The implication is that
because each of us perceives the world through our
own eyes, reality itself changes from person to person
8. Selection is the process by which we attend to some stimuli in
our environment and not others. Selection is often influenced
by our personal motives, incentives, impulses, or drives to act a
certain way. Perceptual expectancy is a predisposition
to perceive things in a certain way.
9. Organization, the second
stage of the perceptual
process, is how we
mentally arrange
information into
meaningful and digestible
patterns.
10. INTERPRETATION
In the interpretation stage
of perception, we attach
meaning to stimuli. Each
stimulus or group of
stimuli can
be interpreted in many
different
ways. Interpretation refers
to the process by which we
represent and understand
stimuli that affect us
12. PROXIMITY :-
• The principle of proximity states that things that are close together appear to be
more related than things that are spaced farther apart
13. The Law of Similarity is the
gestalt grouping law that states
that elements that are similar
to each other tend to be
perceived as a unified group.
14. Continuity, as it pertains
to psychology and Gestalt theory,
refers to vision and is the tendency to
create continuous patterns and
perceive connected objects as
uninterrupted.
15. CLOSURE :
Closure is the
illusion of seeing
an incomplete
stimulus as
though it were
whole. Thus, one
unconsciously
tends to
complete (close)
a triangle or a
square that has a
gap in one of its
sides.
16. Symmetry involves a close or
exact correspondence between
opposite halves of an image on
the facing sides of an axis or
center. ... We associate a variety
of psychological qualities with
this type of symmetry. The image
may feel peaceful, calm, stable,
harmonious, or grounded -
especially in bilateral symmetry.
17. COMMON FATE
The Gestalt law of common fate states that humans
perceive visual elements that move in the same
speed and/or direction as parts of a single stimulus
