                                Welcome to my blog
                   Stephen Williams Friday, June 21
Today I went to the beach.
It was my first day at the
                                  ocean for many years. The
sound and smell of the ocean
                                  brought back memories of the
                                  great family vacations when
I was a child. We always went to the beach
for a week in the summer. I remembered
playing for hours in the sand with my sister
and crying when I couldn’t have any ice
cream. Oh, and I remembered finding a
huge jellyfish on the beach, and running
away because I was scared! Amazing,
really, the things you remember from your
                   childhood ...

I lived the first 15 years of my life in Kenya. My parents
worked there as teachers in a small town. They’re both from
Los Angeles, so when we returned to the U.S., we lived there.
This was a pretty difficult time for me. In Kenya, everyone
knew who I was – I was a foreigner. In Los Angeles, because
I looked like everyone else, people thought I was the same as
them. But I wasn’t. I was different. I had different experiences,
and so I couldn’t really connect with people. I’m proud to be
American, but sometimes I really miss Africa. Trisha Harding

M y name is Tomona Ishii. My father is Japanese and my mother is from India. I was born
in Japan. I really enjoy my life in the U.K. I play a Japanese musical instrument called
“koto.” Of course, I can speak Japanese (but English is easier!). Sometimes I visit India to
see my mother’s family. There are many languages in India. My mother’s language is Bengali.
I can speak a little Bengali. I like to watch Indian movies. I’m also very interested in Indian
design and embroidery. I’m 17 now. Life is getting harder. I’m thinking about my future.
I want to go to university, but I don’t know which country to go to. I love them both!

I always thought of Turkey you are connected with
                   as my “home” because I

I think Germany is my home. someone is not with you
I speak German and all my any longer, or because you

friends are here. I can’t really something any longer
remember my life before I weird adj

               Growing	up	Chinese-Canadian

I	am	Chinese,	but	I	live	in	Canada.	I	came	to
Vancouver	with	my	husband	five	years	ago.	We

live	in	an	area	called	Richmond.	Many	Asian
people,	and	especially	Chinese,	live	here.	I	like	my
life	in	Canada,	but	I	am	also	proud	to	be	Chinese.
When	I	had	a	son	last	year,	I	needed	to	think
of	a	name	for	him.	Most	of	my	Chinese	friends
gave	their	children	English	names.	They	said	a
Chinese	name	would	cause	problems	for	my	son
in	the	future.	I	don’t	agree.	I	think	we	have	to
keep	our	culture	alive.	I	want	my	son	to	have	a
Chinese	name,	and	to	learn	to	speak	and	read
Chinese,	too.	I	want	him	to	know	Chinese	culture.
Some	Chinese	people	born	in	Canada	can’t	speak
Chinese.	I	think	this	is	wrong.	I	want	to	teach
my	son	the	language	and	culture	of	China	–	then
he	will	be	proud	of	being	Chinese.	Yes,	we	live
in	Canada	and	we’re	happy	here.	But	we	are	still
Chinese	in	our	hearts!	We	must	not	lose	that.

As worldwide travel becomes easier, there are more and more TCKs. These children have a _________________ childhoods – they combine their parents’ culture with the culture of the country they grow up in to make a third culture. That is why they’re called “third culture kids.” Research from Useem and others shows that as adults, some TCKs feel b _________________ in every country they live in because no place feels like “home.” It is c _________________ , however, to think that TCKs are d _________________ people. Most adult TCKs think they can understand people well. They often make friends easily, wherever they go. Many get high qualifications and have good jobs. They often help in their local communities, working e _________________ as volunteers in their free time. TCKs are also very f _________________ . They know a lot about other cultures. A lot of TCKs keep in contact with people in different countries. Many also speak one or more foreign languages. Predicting You’re going to read about the experiences of three TCKs. • 10. I lived the first 15 years of my life in Kenya. My parents worked there as teachers in a small town. They’re both from Los Angeles, so when we returned to the U.S., we lived there. This was a pretty difficult time for me. In Kenya, everyone knew who I was – I was a foreigner. In Los Angeles, because I looked like everyone else, people thought I was the same as them. But I wasn’t. I was different. I had different experiences, and so I couldn’t really connect with people. I’m proud to be American, but sometimes I really miss Africa. Trisha Harding M y name is Tomona Ishii. My father is Japanese and my mother is from India. I was born in Japan. I really enjoy my life in the U.K. I play a Japanese musical instrument called “koto.” Of course, I can speak Japanese (but English is easier!). Sometimes I visit India to see my mother’s family. There are many languages in India. My mother’s language is Bengali. I can speak a little Bengali. I like to watch Indian movies. I’m also very interested in Indian design and embroidery. I’m 17 now. Life is getting harder. I’m thinking about my future. I want to go to university, but I don’t know which country to go to. I love them both! Growing up Chinese-Canadian I am Chinese, but I live in Canada. I came to Vancouver with my husband five years ago. We live in an area called Richmond. Many Asian people, and especially Chinese, live here. I like my life in Canada, but I am also proud to be Chinese. When I had a son last year, I needed to think of a name for him. Most of my Chinese friends gave their children English names. They said a Chinese name would cause problems for my son in the future. I don’t agree. I think we have to keep our culture alive. I want my son to have a Chinese name, and to learn to speak and read Chinese, too. I want him to know Chinese culture. Some Chinese people born in Canada can’t speak Chinese. I think this is wrong. I want to teach my son the language and culture of China – then he will be proud of being Chinese. Yes, we live in Canada and we’re happy here. But we are still Chinese in our hearts! We must not lose that. a The writer … c She wants to … 1 lives in China. 1 stay in Canada. 2 lives in Canada. 2 return to China. b She wants her son to … d The woman feels … 1 learn Chinese language and culture. 1 she is Canadian. 2 have an English name. 2 she is Chinese. 60 Unit 8: Growing up in another culture 9780230724778_Theme 4.indd 60 15/1/09 13:35:38
