11. Why Portfolio
1. encourage students to become
accountable and responsible for their
own learning (i.e., self-directed, active,
peer-supported, adult learning)
2. can be the focus of initiating a
discussion between student and tutor
3. facilitate reflection and self-
assessment. http://www.utpjournals.

12. Portfolio Issues
1. When portfolios are used for
summative assessment, students may
be reluctant to reveal weaknesses
2. Portfolio assessment may produce
unacceptably low inter-rater reliability,
especially if the assessment rubrics
are not properly prepared or are used
by untrained assessors.

14. The instructors are encouraged to
meet with the student to evaluate
progress mid-term during the
structured experience.

Issue: Assessment
= Learning
15. This preliminary evaluation will serve
as a benchmark for the student and is
used to assess progress, assuring
communication between the instructor
and the student. Instructors should
encourage open dialogue during the
review process to make certain that the
student understands his or her
progress.

Issue: Surprises
16. Demonstration of learning and
improvement over the course of the rotation
will be considered an important factor in the
evaluation process. Instructors will provide
information about each student’s
performance level and will then indicate
whether the student has “completed
requirements” for the structured practice
experience. If such assessment is made,
and provided the student has met all other
requirements, a final grade of CR will be
forwarded to the Registrar.
