What is Operating System
 AN Operating System is A Software That communicate with the hardware and allow other
programs to be run
 The purpose of an operating system is to provide an environment in which a user can execute
programs. The primary goal is thus to make the computer system convenient to use. A secondary

 The OS helps you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to
speak the computer’s language. It is not possible for the user to use any computer
or mobile device without having an operating system
 The operating system controls and coordinates the use of hardware among the
various applications programs for the various users.

There are numerous types of operating systems in today’s ICT world
 Mac Operating System designed and owned by Apple Inc.
 Windows by Microsoft Inc.,
 Linux by Community,
 Android by Google Inc. and others.
FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING AN OPERATING SYSTEM
 Hardware configuration or provision of the computer e.g.
 memory size,
 hard disk capacity,
 Types of processor etc.
 Applications intended for the computer.
 User friendliness or human computer interface
i.e. is it command line based, menu driven or graphical user interface based
 Cost-how expensive is the operating system?
 Reliability i.e. can it run without crashing or hanging i.e. stop responding to commands.
INTRODUCTION TO LINUX
