transportation for millions of Chicagoans. He also spent several years as a

– Complement with folks that are good at what you aren’t
• You need at least three wizards (including your direct abilities):
– A process wizard
– A technical wizard
– A political wizard

– You must communicate your vision to others
– You have to know enough to direct your specialists, though you don’t
have to know enough to do all of it yourself
• Many times you are growing organically
– Be strategic in these early steps or you won’t get to later steps
– Always choose action over talking

• What stinks about being CDO?
– You don’t get to do data stuff directly
– Meetings: learn to love them
– Aligning incentives may be outside your reach
– You have to overcome irrational fears
– Most of your time not in meetings is spent on personnel management
– All issues with data are your fault

– You get to build and scale a high-performing data function
--- often from scratch
– Coaching, mentoring, helping people build their careers
– An opportunity to talk about data constantly
– A seat at the table to help drive business strategy

– Higher compensation
– You might just save your organization

• There are two paths to CDO, business and technical
– Pick one, and be great at it
– Be better at the other path than anybody else on your chosen path
• The only value of data is in how it changes a business on three dimensions:
– Revenue (top-line)
– Cost (bottom-line)
– Risk Management (variance)
• You must maximize the value created by the data
– Data alone is worthless until changing the business
