online learning strategies. I
would suggest everyone do it,
its really useful
Being an online student takes
dedication, organization and
the support of those around
you. I struggle staying focused
when I wish I was doing
something else…
11. Next Steps?
• What does the future look like with this course?
• learners new to online – not tech savvy
• learners who grew up with technology – already familiar with LMS
– “digital natives”

Notas do Editor
Welcome to our presentation – Rise with Online Learning at Bow Valley College – Any time, any place, any path , any pace learning. Our 2020 vision if to provide learning at any time, any place any path and at any pace. We at Bow Valley College have been working towards this vision for the last several years to ensure that learners can access their learning at any time, any place, any path, any pace by 2020
-The purpose of our presentation is to share a course we developed at Bow Valley College.
-online course
-intended to be a tutorial for new online BVC learners to orient them to the tools of our Learning Management System and also to get them ready for online learning.
-developed initially for CSB, but now being used college wide
Introduce ourselves – who we are and what we do at BVC.
How many organizations have an online tutorial/course for learners to take before they begin their program?
-if there are – have folks share their experience of why they developed or started using this type of course.
Fully online learners sometimes don’t have a sense of belonging to the campus. We developed a short video to introduce learners to our campus (play video).
In our online courses at BVC, instructors and online delivery officers noticed difficulties unique to online learners including a different level and type of engagement. The development of this course was one of the responses to these issues.
As we increased our online offering at Bow Valley College, we became aware of difficulties new online learners were having. Additionally, at BVC, all learners have to take at least one online course in their program. This means that all BVC learners are online learners at some point in their time as a learner – this dramatically increased the number of online learners we were dealing with.
Instructors are also becoming more familiar and comfortable with the LMS – meaning they are using it more for their face to face courses and all learners need to be familiar with the LMS.
Learners may not be aware of functions of LMS
Some learners encounter technological problems which impact their starting of the course
Lacking skills to be successful with online learning – or they don’t have an understanding of how online learning is different from traditional/face to face learning
Engage online learners with BVC, CSB and the course – encourage a connection between fully online learners and the campus
The development of this course was our response to many of these issues
In this session, our objective is to share our course with webinar participants as a practice/method and our response to assist in the success of our online learners. We will explain how this course can assist faculty by preparing learners to be better online learners – before the academic courses begin. This allows faculty to focus on the subject matter and not have to spend time ensuring online/blended learners understand online basics.
-This tutorial or orientation course ensures that all learners have a baseline or minimum starting point with online skills and using D2L.
When developing new tools and resources for learners – it is important to Treasure the past. We have to look at “what are we already doing well” and bring that in. At BVC we utilize best practice in online curriculum development. We embraced a new LMS (D2L by Brightspace) a few years ago. We continually see increased and more sophisticated use of the LMS in both f2f and online classrooms.
-all BVC learners must take at least one course online – mandated by policy. This has dramatically increased the number of online learners in the Chiu School of Business and across the college.
-finally – our vision at BVC of “Any time, any place, any path, any pace” guides much of what we do. Increase in online learners is one focus in advancing this vison.
-Statistics for ecampus Alberta show that Bow Valley College is the second largest provider of online courses – post secondary institution in Alberta
-Our business school – the Chiu School of Business has seen tremendous growth in the last couple of years, in both online and face to face programming. This has resulted in us now being the largest business school in the college sector in Alberta.
-at the Chiu School of Business, we have some of our programs fully online including our Legal Assistant Diploma and several certificates. The college is committed to increasing the online offerings so that all of our programs will be online by 2020.
-this underlines our need to ensure that we are supporting our online learners and setting them up for success.
What does the future look like? Technology already plays a key role in education, this will continue in the future and as educators we need resources to ensure our learners are ready for it. Technology is prevalent in the work force and as we graduate work ready graduates, they must be ready for it as well.
The NMC (New Media Consortium) Horizon Report surveys post-secondary institutions and summarizes technological trends. For both 2015 and 2016, one of the key trends identified was the increased use and presence of Blended Learning, meaning there will be increased use of online delivery. At Bow Valley college we are currently working on a HyFlex course to be offered initially in winter 2017. The course will be designed to provide the ultimate in flexibility for learners in a blended learning environment.
