CONFERENCE CHAIRS 1
GREETINGS FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR
Dear Friends,
We are so glad you joined us today aboard the U.S.S. Hornet.
Countless heroes have walked this historic ship's decks, and the
very rivets radiate that special something that heroes are made of.
Allow that special something to open your eyes, ears and heart to
new ways of thinking, doing, and relating, that will help you to
achieve success in your Heroic Toastmasters journey.
Everyone here, from our accomplished keynote and educational
speakers, to the new and experienced Toastmasters across the table from you, has something
to teach you, and something to learn from you. You will learn to cultivate wingmen, enjoy the
magic of laughter, harness the power of leadership, rediscover critical thinking, control your
monkey mind, and awaken and celebrate your inner hero.
A big thumbs-up to the conference team for your patience, dedication and teamwork. The list
below is just the tip of the iceberg: so many wonderful people—district officers, club officers,
prior conference staffers and other D57 Toastmasters—raised your hands to lend a hand. I
feel lucky to be surrounded by so many talented Toastmasters. Thank you all!

DISTRICT 57 GOVERNOR’S WELCOME
The Hornet is the perfect metaphor.
Our members spread their speaking wings and soar,
then come back to their base to learn some more,
refuel, recharge, relax, restore rapport.
You’ll meet some folks you haven’t met before.
We’ve many members, but those at the core
will always check their egos at the door
to work together with esprit de corps,
and gladly help with every little chore.
We’ll get to hear some vocal aces roar
and add their voices to Toastmasters lore.
So all ashore who plan to go ashore!
The rest of us will all have fun galore.
You won’t forget the day we have in store.
Your District Governor,
Dennis Dawson

MESSAGE FROM LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Welcome to the 2011 District 57 Spring Conference! What an
experience this is sure to be; not only because of the unique
and historic venue, but because of the lineup of world class
presenters. And you needn’t miss a single presentation, since
they all will take place on the same stage!
Today we’re celebrating the hero within you. Heroes are
everywhere, and come in all shapes and sizes. Heroes don’t
always wear a cape and a mask, and many don’t even realize
that they are heroes. I’d like to express my thanks to some of
my heroes, a few of the many Toastmasters who have not
only guided District 57 to become the wonderful District it is
today, but have personally aided me as a coach, mentor, and
friend. Many have served in the role of District Governor:
Dennis Dawson, Gary Wong, Ashley Harkness, Tyree Johnson,
Abe Ghanbari, Denise Abero, Bill Meyn, Cassandra Cockrill,
Jim Doyle, Pat McManus, Craig Harrison, Vivian Faye, Marion
Keibel, Ginger Kane, and Lynden Davis. Additionally, Rick
and Marcia Sydor, Ron Wallace, Kathy Todd-Watson, Tevis
Thompson, Earleen Norris, and Bill Woolfolk have risen to
the rank of International Director, and Michael Notaro, to
International President-Elect.
These are just a few of my many heroes.
Writer Bernard Malamud said that our heroes help us to
discover “how far we can go.” Who are your heroes? How
far can you go? Today is your day of discovery as we
celebrate the hero within you.

MESSAGE FROM LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF MARKETING
Welcome, fellow Toastmaster, to the 2011 Spring Conference!
The theme for this Conference is one I’m sure many of us can
relate to. Thinking back on journeys that I have had in life
and with Toastmasters, some could be considered heroic.
Joining my first club when I was really scared about speaking
what I had on my mind is still a vivid memory. I soon learned
what a supportive family I had become a part of.
I discovered that I had a voice and wanted to express it. I
explored new ideas and methods to express them. I
experienced the joy of victory and the agony of defeat. But I
didn’t give up.
What has your journey been? Are you exploring what you
don’t know yet? Have you been discovering that you have
skills you didn’t realize you had? I hope you are experiencing
the wonderful fulfillment as you complete your
Communication and Leadership goals.
I challenge you to begin a new journey every day. Start today
and
Explore the ideas presented at our educational
sessions
Discover what challenges and goals still lie ahead and
know you can attain them
Experience the achievements of your fellow members
and know you can accomplish them also.
Continue to make every day count and reach for the
greatness within you.

the Comedy Magician
Q. What do Bill Clinton, George Bush Sr., the Coca-Cola Company, the US Army, the
MGM Grand Hotel, Ray Charles, and Johns Hopkins University all have in common?
A. They have all enjoyed Robert Strong’s comedy magic show!
Robert has been crisscrossing the world since 1985
entertaining audiences large and small, young and old,
formal and casual, and everything in between! Recently
voted “San Francisco’s Funniest Prop Comedian,” “The
Bay Area’s Best Performer,” and “San Francisco’s Best
Comedian,” Robert has appeared on CBS This Morning,
performed for the United States Congress, and taken his
act to more than 30 different countries. Although Robert
specializesasacorporateentertainer,heregularlyappears

retreats, trade shows, conventions, conferences, product
launches, sales seminars, awards ceremonies, banquets
& galas, cruise ships, colleges & universities, comedy
clubs, festivals, theaters, private parties, political events,
non-profit organizations, and much more.
Robert Strong is also the host and producer of Comedy
Talks: Conversations with the Legends of Comedy—a
hosted panel discussion in the spirit of the classic
late night talk show. At each show, Robert talks with
a panel of three comedy legends about their careers,
personal lives, insider gossip, and tips of the comedy
trade. Comedy Talks launched in August 2010 with
celebrity panelists Carol Channing, Rich Little, Shelley
Berman, George Segal, Paul Mazursky, Ronnie Schell,
Steve Rossi, Will Durst, and Robert Morse.
Leave a lasting impression by having Robert:
• Be your Master of Ceremonies, host, or featured speaker
• Create a custom illusion to make your CEO appear (or
disappear if you insist!)
• Write custom humor about your group, product, theme, and
message
• Draw thousands of qualified leads to your trade show booth
• Produce a large Las Vegas style illusion show for your group
• Lead a corporate training program to your specifications
Corporate Events: Performing professionally since 1985, Robert
Strong knows how to read an audience and engage them with
humor, wit, and charm. He learns about your company’s product,
culture, and clients and then creates a memorable, personalized,
laugh-out-loud corporate event that runs smoothly.

Larry Bilsky: Awaken Your Inner Hero—Say Goodbye to Superman
Our heroes always seem to be perfectly suited for the tasks that they are called upon
to perform. Often we say to ourselves: "I could never have done that," believing we
need some sort of extraordinary ability or skill that we now lack. This presentation:
1. Illustrates and acknowledges the hero we all have within.
2. Explores the mind-set of a Hero.
3. Provides the context/framework for living a Heroic life.
Lawrence Bilsky has been a student of personal development for most of his life. His
resume includes stints as an entrepreneur, inventor, counselor, negotiator, manager and father. His
passion is motivational speaking. Lawrence is an active member of the Oakland Hills Club.

3 powerful characteristics that all leaders demonstrate—to make the difference in

Dennis Dawson: I Once Gave a Speech THIS BIG! (It'll Be Ready In Just One
Minute) Dennis Dawson is a member of Toastmasters. He promised to provide a
description of his presentation in time to get it into the program, but failed to do so.
He has assured us that it will be, by his estimation "really cool, I swear." We were,
however, able to speak with Dennis's moustache, his official spokesgrowth. The ends
of his moustache are artfully curled and augmented through the liberal use of snow-
white moustache wax. He has worn a moustache, with or without a full beard, since
leaving his role as the back-end of a roller skating horse in the Disneyland Christmas Parade in 1980.
Kimi Hirotsu Ziemski: The Tyranny of the Urgent Professionals are under the
tyranny of the urgent. In an age of attempting to match our processing to the speed
of the Internet, we must also recognize its limitations. Rediscover the value of critical
thinking to our leadership and our organizations. This approach is as old as the
practice of philosophy and as necessary as oxygen. Use of critical thinking in
processing information and making decisions can take hours or moments. It also
takes will and inclination. (Note: This session includes a period for questions and
answers.) Kimi Hirotsu Ziemski is a top leadership speaker specializing in project
management. Engaging and energetic, she brings her audience on a journey to greater use of their
potential. For more, visit www.energizingenterprises.com
Greg Hullen: Mornings with Jack “Mornings with Jack” is dedicated to the passing
of Jack LaLanne (January, 2011) and one of his biggest fans, Greg’s grandmother,
Edna, who passed in 1990. Both Jack and Edna lived well into their 90’s due in part
to a healthy diet and regular exercise. Greg will discuss how these individuals
inspired his heroic journey and propelled him to live a healthier lifestyle with proper
nutrition and physical fitness. Greg Hullen, ATM-B, joined Toastmasters in May 2006.
A member of Delta #6872, Greg is acting B-27 Area Governor and the father of three
sons, Preston 21, Grant 19, Trent 17. He lives in Discovery Bay with his high school
sweetheart Rona, whom he married last month. For more, visit www.hullenins.com

  • 3. CONFERENCE CHAIRS 1 GREETINGS FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR Dear Friends, We are so glad you joined us today aboard the U.S.S. Hornet. Countless heroes have walked this historic ship's decks, and the very rivets radiate that special something that heroes are made of. Allow that special something to open your eyes, ears and heart to new ways of thinking, doing, and relating, that will help you to achieve success in your Heroic Toastmasters journey. Everyone here, from our accomplished keynote and educational speakers, to the new and experienced Toastmasters across the table from you, has something to teach you, and something to learn from you. You will learn to cultivate wingmen, enjoy the magic of laughter, harness the power of leadership, rediscover critical thinking, control your monkey mind, and awaken and celebrate your inner hero. A big thumbs-up to the conference team for your patience, dedication and teamwork. The list below is just the tip of the iceberg: so many wonderful people—district officers, club officers, prior conference staffers and other D57 Toastmasters—raised your hands to lend a hand. • 5. DISTRICT LEADERS 3 DISTRICT 57 GOVERNOR’S WELCOME The Hornet is the perfect metaphor. Our members spread their speaking wings and soar, then come back to their base to learn some more, refuel, recharge, relax, restore rapport. You’ll meet some folks you haven’t met before. We’ve many members, but those at the core will always check their egos at the door to work together with esprit de corps, and gladly help with every little chore. We’ll get to hear some vocal aces roar and add their voices to Toastmasters lore. So all ashore who plan to go ashore! The rest of us will all have fun galore. You won’t forget the day we have in store. Your District Governor, Dennis Dawson 3

  • 7. 5 MESSAGE FROM LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING Welcome to the 2011 District 57 Spring Conference! What an experience this is sure to be; not only because of the unique and historic venue, but because of the lineup of world class presenters. And you needn’t miss a single presentation, since they all will take place on the same stage! Today we’re celebrating the hero within you. Heroes are everywhere, and come in all shapes and sizes. Heroes don’t always wear a cape and a mask, and many don’t even realize that they are heroes. I’d like to express my thanks to some of my heroes, a few of the many Toastmasters who have not only guided District 57 to become the wonderful District it is today, but have personally aided me as a coach, mentor, and friend. Many have served in the role of District Governor: Dennis Dawson, Gary Wong, Ashley Harkness, Tyree Johnson, Abe Ghanbari, Denise Abero, Bill Meyn, Cassandra Cockrill, Jim Doyle, Pat McManus, Craig Harrison, Vivian Faye, Marion Keibel, Ginger Kane, and Lynden Davis. Additionally, Rick and Marcia Sydor, Ron Wallace, Kathy Todd-Watson, Tevis Thompson, Earleen Norris, and Bill Woolfolk have risen to the rank of International Director, and Michael Notaro, to International President-Elect. These are just a few of my many heroes. Writer Bernard Malamud said that our heroes help us to discover “how far we can go.” Who are your heroes? How far can you go? Today is your day of discovery as we celebrate the hero within you. D57 Lt. Gov. Education & Training 5 DISTRICT LEADERS

Thinking back on journeys that I have had in life and with Toastmasters, some could be considered heroic. Joining my first club when I was really scared about speaking what I had on my mind is still a vivid memory. I soon learned what a supportive family I had become a part of. I discovered that I had a voice and wanted to express it. I explored new ideas and methods to express them. I experienced the joy of victory and the agony of defeat. But I didn’t give up. What has your journey been? Are you exploring what you don’t know yet? Have you been discovering that you have skills you didn’t realize you had? I hope you are experiencing the wonderful fulfillment as you complete your Communication and Leadership goals. I challenge you to begin a new journey every day. Start today and Explore the ideas presented at our educational sessions Discover what challenges and goals still lie ahead and know you can attain them Experience the achievements of your fellow members and know you can accomplish them also. Continue to make every day count and reach for the greatness within you. D57 Lt. Gov. of Marketing 7 DISTRICT LEADERS

Dennis Dawson: I Once Gave a Speech THIS BIG! (It'll Be Ready In Just One Minute) Dennis Dawson is a member of Toastmasters. He promised to provide a description of his presentation in time to get it into the program, but failed to do so. He has assured us that it will be, by his estimation "really cool, I swear." We were, however, able to speak with Dennis's moustache, his official spokesgrowth. The ends of his moustache are artfully curled and augmented through the liberal use of snow- white moustache wax. He has worn a moustache, with or without a full beard, since leaving his role as the back-end of a roller skating horse in the Disneyland Christmas Parade in 1980. Kimi Hirotsu Ziemski: The Tyranny of the Urgent Professionals are under the tyranny of the urgent. In an age of attempting to match our processing to the speed of the Internet, we must also recognize its limitations. Rediscover the value of critical thinking to our leadership and our organizations. This approach is as old as the practice of philosophy and as necessary as oxygen. Use of critical thinking in processing information and making decisions can take hours or moments. It also takes will and inclination. (Note: This session includes a period for questions and answers.) Kimi Hirotsu Ziemski is a top leadership speaker specializing in project management. Engaging and energetic, she brings her audience on a journey to greater use of their potential. For more, visit www.energizingenterprises.com Greg Hullen: Mornings with Jack “Mornings with Jack” is dedicated to the passing of Jack LaLanne (January, 2011) and one of his biggest fans, Greg’s grandmother, Edna, who passed in 1990.
