By Colleen Sedgwick
For this task, you are required to conduct research into a design
company within the field you wish to work in (e.g. a fashion
magazine). You may conduct your research entirely from
information online, but you may like to set up a meeting or start
email correspondence with a representative from that company
to acquire some of the facts needed to write this report. You must
write a short response to all of the following questions:
1. What is the name of the company you are researching?
Within which industry do they fall? Why did you choose this
company over similar companies within this industry?
2. Who is the director/head of the company? Where did they
work before this role, and when did they begin this role?
3. What are the other roles within this company, and who
currently fills them? What is their background, and for how
long have they filled these positions?
4. What is the common pathway that these current employees
took to gain their roles at this company? Did they all start
out as interns, or does this company only hire designer with
five years or more experience?
5. Are there any current vacancies? Propose a strategy that
you could implement to gain these positions.
6. Does this company participate in any industry events, like
conferences, talks or seminars? If so, where and when?
TIP: Navigate to the student forum to engage in the discussion
with your peers.
Now that you have completed the Progress challenge, you may
submit your work for feedback and discussion.
Instructions
• Write 500 words and complete as a PDF.
• Navigate to the self-check page to submit.
TIP: If you choose to complete each progress challenge as
you work through the module, the process of completing your
assessment tasks will take a lot less time.
Answer
The Company
It is not purely a design company but I chose the ABC (Australian
Broadcasting Commission). I would classify this industry under
Media (i.e. mass media, broadcasting) – this may include
coverage of a variety of topics like the performing arts, music,
sport, education, and advertising.
I have a myriad three main reasons for choosing the ABC:
1. Firstly, it has educational value;
2. Secondly, I believe the network attracts people who want
to work in the arts and media;
3. Thirdly, I could also choose other broadcasting networks
- SBS, Channel 9, Fox – however, the ABC’s influence has
been the most profound because I of the shows I used to
watch and the music I used to listen to.

30537a - Progress challenge 02
By Colleen Sedgwick
Legal issues relevant to your practice
For this, you will need to write a short report detailing the legal
requirements you will need to take into account while creating
work in your industry. Create a short report that answers the
following questions:
1. Consider your chosen industry from progress challenge 1:
What are the legal requirements you must adhere to in your
ideal graphic design role? Are there any that are specific
to your industry (e.g. fashion)? List at least five key points.
2. What does your current work practice consist of? Describe
your current work environment and outline steps in
which you will work towards creating a (legally) safer
working environment and an environmentally sustainable
professional practice.
3. Consider the concept of intellectual property discussed in
the unit. What steps should you take to safeguard your own
work? How can you respect the IP of other artists within your
own practice?
TIP: Navigate to the student forum to engage in the discussion
with your peers.
SELF-CHECK - Submission A
Now that you have completed the progress challenge, you may
submit your work for feedback and discussion.
Instructions
• Write 200 words and complete as a PDF.
• Navigate to the self-check page to submit.
TIP: If you choose to complete each progress challenge as
5. you work through the module, the process of completing your
assessment tasks will take a lot less time.
Answer
Part 1
I came across a position with the ABC, where I will most likely work
on a contract basis (advertised as a ‘freelance’ job), c/o The
Loop1
.
This position requires me to understand the ABC’s own policies
and procedures, including:
‘…the ABC’s aims, objectives and workplace values, together
with relevant policies and guidelines including Editorial Policies2
,
Child Protection Policy3
, Equity and Diversity4
, WH&S5
’.
It also requires me to understand the law in Papua New Guinea6
(part of the time spent on the job is in Port Moresby). Additionally,
I should have some knowledge about the Papuans and their
values and traditions. Should I get this opportunity to work in PNG,
it would mean both knowing how to protect myself as a woman
living and working there and trying to accurately portray what life
is like, particularly for the women and children there7

Researching trends
By Colleen Sedgwick
This challenge will help you research and apply graphic design
trends that are specific to your chosen industry.
a. Create a collaged inspiration board, by both hand and
scanned-in or using Photoshop. The images and text you use
should reflect the current local and global trends within your
specific industry. You must source each image using at least two
of both formal and informal research strategies and label each
as such. You must communicate your labelling system – e.g. each
image formally sourced will be marked with a red dot, and each
image informally sourced will be marked with a green dot.
b. Find an example of an artist/designer that inspires you.
Create a timeline of how their work has evolved over the last
10 years with images. Write a short response about each design
describing the current industry trends featured globally at the
time of their design.
c. Using this same artist, find at least three designs of theirs that
you can see have a connection or were influenced by other kinds
of creative professionals. Include images and a short response
for each image. For example: ‘I found an image of Victoria
Beckham’s current collection, the motif of triangles was heavily
featured throughout each piece in the collection.
This may be in response to indie musical artists such as Grimes
who feature triangles in their album covers and within their fashion
choices.’
TIP: Navigate to the student forum to engage in the discussion
with your peers.
SELF-CHECK - Submission A
Now that you have completed the Progress challenge, you may

Answer
Part A
Inspiration Board – Symbols
I chose The All-Seeing Eye – the modern use of this symbol (The Eye
of Providence) is most heavily associated with the Freemasons
and the Illuminati. However, David Percival (of the Conscious
Reporter) states that the symbols’ origins date back even further1
.

8.
9. Part B
Inspiration – an artist who uses this symbol (Nickelodeon)
They have used the all-seeing eye in their cartoons2
. (10 words)
Inparticular,thereisadepictionoftheAll-seeingEyeinSpongeBob
Square-pants3
. The name of this episode is the Toy Store of Doom4
.
The original creator of SpongeBob Square-pants was Stephen
Hillenberg – an artist and marine biologist (this probably explains

11. Part C
Connection – The Freemasons and the Illuminati
I chose the people who designed the US $1 bill6
, which features
the Eye of Providence. (17 words).
The people involved in its design were Benjamin Franklin, J Adams
and Thomas Jefferson assisted by the artist Pierre Eugène Du
Simitière7
. Du Simitière was an accomplished portrait painter and
had designed the state seals for Delaware and Virginia.

Freemasonry, http://www.freemasons-freemasonry.com/masonic_dollar.html[8/03/2017 4:43:05
AM]
7 Wikipedia (2017) The Eye of Providence, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_of_
Providence?oldid=757926811
The symbolism not only pays homage to Freemasonry but to
Judaism as well - if you look closely at the Treasury Seal (on the
right hand side of the US $1 bill), you will find a Star of David
directly above the Eagle. This represents Haym Salomon, who
helped financed the American side of the War of Independence
(against Britain). (100 words).
Another connection - Disney
Another artist working for Nickelodeon, Jeff ‘Swampy’ Marsh
also worked for Disney8
and for Fox studios9
. (17 words).
(Total = 244 words [Sorry, it is a bit over, I know]).
8 From what I heard, Disney was also a Freemason. See Karg, B, and Young, JK (2009): 101 Secrets
of the Freemasons, in Amazon.com, https://www.amazon.com/dp/1440503788/ref=rdr_ext_tmb;

made a film called ‘101 Dalmatians’? Need I say more?
