1 2033 Management Information Systems Individual Business Case
Assignment
Due: see the course outline
Context. You are hired as a new CIO (Chief Information Officer) for a
company of your choice. It may be a fictional (e.g., Chappa Foods) or a
real organization operating in any industry. For example, this may be a
large retailer (e.g., Lululemon Canada), a manufacturing company (e.g.,
Bombardier), a university (e.g., Lakehead), or an e-commerce start-up (a
fictional one). Be creative! Due to increasing competition and budget
crisis, the CEO requested that you introduce a new IT to make the
organization more effective and efficient. You are required to prepare a
written report describing and justifying your IT that will be presented to
the Board of Directors.
Your task. Based on what you learned in the course, identify a particular
need in your organization, explain how a new IT will solve this problem,
and justify its implementation.
Examples of IT issues to solve. This may be any issue that was or was
not discussed in class. Examples include (but not limited to) lack of
online presence for a retailer – there is a need to introduce an
ecommerce website; inefficient processes or lack of coordination among
departments – there is a need for a database management system;
reliance on intuition for decision-making – there is a need for business
intelligence solution; limited knowledge sharing – there is a need for a
knowledge management system; etc.
2. Examples of IT. You may use ANY IT of your choice that were or were
not covered in this course. Note that this should be a specific IT (e.g.,
Tableau Desktop – not a BI system in general; MS SharePoint Server
2016 – not a general collaboration tool; MS Dynamics CRM – not a
general CRM, etc.) If you are unsure about the suitability of your IT,
feel free to discuss your choice with the instructor in advance. Note that
your IT may generate extra revenue (e.g., through ecommerce), reduce
costs (e.g., by facilitating efficiency), or contribute somehow to
organizational strategy.
Business Case. The purpose of a business case is to justify the
implementation of any initiative, in this case, a new IT. It represents a
formal, well-structured document that describes your IT,
2
offers rationale for its implementation, offers a cost-benefit analysis, and
attempts to convince
the key decision-makers.
Report. In addition to any information and headings of your choice, your
report should include
the following headings:
Executive Summary (1 page). Its purpose is to summarize the entire
document to allow the
busy reader to quickly comprehend the key points presented in your
report. In many cases,
decision-makers only read the executive summary and consult a few
parts of the report for
clarifications. Hint: write it last. Do NOT copy and paste sentences from
the body of your report;
3. instead, summarize the key points.
Problem Statement (0.5 page). Clearly state and describe the problem
that the organization is
facing. Justify why this issue needs to be addressed.
Available IT Alternatives (1 page). Identify several available IT and
briefly describe them. For
example, if there is a need for a BI tool, you may identify and describe
Tableau Desktop, IBM
Cognos Insight, and SAP Business Objects as potential candidates.
Recommended IT (1 page). Select your IT. Justify your recommendation
(why it was selected
over alternatives).
Cost-benefit Analysis (1 page). Identity tangible and intangible costs and
benefits of your IT for
the organization.
Implementation Plan (0.5 – 1 page). Develop IT acquisition and
implementation plan. Hint:
rely on Chapter 13.
Note:
Page limits above are recommendations, feel free to deviate if needed.
You may not know the exact costs (e.g., training expenses) or benefits
(e.g., increase in
sales). Make reasonable assumptions and justify them.
4. Feel free to discuss your choice of the IT with the instructor before
starting writing your
report.
Review cases in your textbook for ideas.
3
