1. Kartavya NIT Patna
Introduction:-It is known that nearly a quarter of the world population lives in India. Of these more
than a Billion people, not every person has the privilege to get educated and lead a happy and satisfied
life. Education is a prerequisite for every individual and this also being recognized by our Government
came up in the form of Right to Education. In this situation where even Primary Education seemed a
distant dream to the underprivileged people, those of us who were & are conscious and non-
complacent enough to realize this simple fact came up with the idea of a non-profit organization that
would provide assistance to them financially as well as through concentrated team effort. Thus,
Kartavya NIT PATNA was born.
What is Kartavya NIT Patna?
Kartavya NIT Patna is a nonprofit organization run by students of NIT Patna.
We contribute some fund every month for our organization.
We provide routine free tuition to the slum kids nearby.
We filter out meritorious ones and fund them to step ahead by admitting them into proper
schooling and bearing their expenses.
Why was Kartavya NIT Patna started?
Bihar is one of the underdeveloped states of our country as far as the education system
is concerned. Many people in Bihar are still living in poverty. NIT Patna is situated on the banks
of holy river GANGA, in the heart of the city. But on the other hand there are many slums
around our college. People are living a miserable life, they are deprived of basic amenities i.e.
food, shelter, health facilities and education standard. The only way to remove this poverty is
proper education to these people and their kids. As these kids are the future of our nation so
education is the ultimate way to raise their standard of living and thus contribute in the progress
of our nation.
Our seniors (from 2005 batch) realized this fact and decided to start a campaign for
educating these people. As a result of their constant and sincere efforts KARTAVYA NIT PATNA
was shaped into reality, with an aim to contribute selflessly towards a better society and
towards educated India.
What are our vision and objectives?
Our vision is to-
Uplift the standard of living of the slum dwelling people by providing them quality education.
To contribute selflessly towards a better society by developing a sense of equality.
Our organizational structure:
There are students from each year as Kartavya member. There is no hierarchical classification.
Members can be broadly classified as:
2. MEMBER FUNCTION
FOURTH YEAR GUIDES THE VOLUNTEERS AND MANAGES THE
FUNDS
THIRD YEAR SUPERVISES THE FUNCTIONING OF
ORGANISATION, MANAGEMENT AND MEETINGS.
SECOND YEAR TEACHES, GUIDES THE FIRST YEAR VOLUNTEERS,
MAINTAINS A RECORD OF ATTENDANCE AND
STATIONERY REQUIREMENTS.
FIRST YEAR ACTUAL FIELD WORKERS AND DOES THE MOST OF
THE TEACHING JOB.
How do we find our goals?
About 100 students of NIT PATNA are devoted on routine basis for this noble cause.
A fund is generated through monthly contribution from each kartavya member, donation from
non kartavya members from college, Voluntary donations by NIT PATNA alumni, faculties and
other philanthropists, news paper collection in hostel and library.
Fund is utilized for providing children stationery items, books, fees for their school, school dress
and prizes.
Way of teaching (present scenario):
15 Kartavya members teach daily for two hours (5:30-7:30pm).
The total strength of the students is about 150 from nursery to class 8.
Regular weekly tests are taken, and a major test at the end of month for comprehensive
evaluation of students.
Students performing well in test are rewarded by prizes like clothes, bags, books,
chocolates, fruits, sweets etc.
Students are given computer education through laptops of kartavya members.
Meritorious students are given special tuitions for NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA, SAINIK
SCHOOL etc. preparations.
What have we achieved?
In 2005 we started with only 10 students but today we have 150 students enrolled in Kartavya.
We have enrolled 30 students in local MAHENDRU PUBLIC SCHOOL, and we are affording their
fee, dress, books and other requirements.
Local children used to wander everywhere and were not studying but today they come to
Kartavya daily.
In Kartavya we give them moral lessons and personal hygiene lesson and due to this, children
are now more disciplined and their families as well as dwellings better.
Above all we have given hope to both children and their parents for a bright future.
Future planning:
3. In future Kartavya is going to be a part of NSS.
Through NSS we will get more fund and we are planning to extend our strength to250 and even
more.
We aim to get all students enrolled in good schools.
We are planning to start educational tours for the students on at least once in a year to nearby
places around Patna which are of historical importance such as Golghar; museum etc. helping
the students to break the monotony of regular classes and also enhance their outer knowledge.
We are planning to make a smart class equipped with computer, projector and latest education
technology.
We will extend our study to class 12 and will give them special preparation for various
engineering entrance exams.
We are going to run yoga classes, physical education, art, and other co curricular activities.
