The Male Reproductive System
(At A Glance)
External Organs of the Male
Reproductive Sysytem
Testicles
• Responsible for
spermatogenesis (the
production of sperm) which
takes place in the seminiferous
tubules.
• The testicles also produce
male hormones called
testosterone.
• The epididymis is a coiled tube
that lies atop of each testicles.
It’s purpose is to store sperm
until it is matured and ready to
be released.
Penis
• The penis has two sole purposes,
to release either semen or urine.
• During the process of ejaculation
(the release of semen) a
sphincter closes to keep urine
from escaping the urethra of the
penis.
• The soft tip of the penis (head) is
referred to as the glans penis.
• Upon birth it is protected by
extra skin called the foreskin or
prepuce that is most times than
not cut off during a process called
circumcision.
Internal Organs of the Male
Reproductive System
Vas Deferens
• The male reproductive organ
contain two Vas Deferens.
• Each carry sperm from the
epididymis and into the urethra.
• The Vas Deferens along with
nerves, arteries, veins and
lymphatic vessels form the
spermatic cord.
• The spermatic cord travels up in
front of the urinary bladder, over
the top of the bladder, then
finally down the back side of the
bladder then empties into the
urethra
Internal Organs of the Male
Reproductive System
Seminal Vesicles
• The Male Reproductive System
contains two Seminal Vesicles.
• Each Seminal Vesicle is connected
to a Vas Deferen just before it
empties into the urethra. They
are located at the base of the
urinary bladder.
• These vesicles secrete a glucose
rich fluid that nourishes sperm.
• This glucose rich fluid in the
Seminal Vesicle along with sperm
make up semen.
Internal Organs of the Male
Reproductive System
Prostate Gland
• The Male Reproductive System
contains only one Prostate Gland.
• The prostate gland secretes an
alkaline fluid that assists in keeping
sperm alive by neutralizing the pH
of the urethra and vagina.
• When enlarged, the prostate can
cause difficulty in urination.
• Males between the ages of 40 and
75 should receive a PSA regularly to
screen themselves for prostate
cancer.
• A DRE (digital rectal exam) is useful
for men who may have an enlarged
prostate.
Internal Organs of the Male
Reproductive System
Bulbourethral Glands
• Two small glands which are
located on either side of the
urethra right under the
prostate.
• The bulbourethral glands
secrete a lubricating ,
mucous-like fluid that
becomes a part of
ejaculation.
