Assessment Task Instructions for Students
This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to apply brushed or rolled paint coatings to
different materials to form a protective and decorative painted finish. The unit includes preparation of the work area,
mixing of materials, application of paint, finishing of the surface and completion of clean-up activities.
All equipment selected must be in good working order, and you must wear correct PPE throughout the entire task.
You must followall safety instructions throughout the task. If at any time you are deemed to be unsafe the assessor
will stop your assessment and this will be counted as your first attempt.
Note:
You are required to take photos of yourself undertaking this practical task.
This evidence will be added to the eLearn drop box where you teacher/ assessor will be able to mark your
assessment.
Assessment range and conditions:
Assessment will beconducted in simulated work environment at CIT Bruce under teacher supervision atall times during
your normal CIT day.If at any stage the assessor deems the assessmentto be unsafeit will bestopped. Access to all
resources,manual and standards is permitted. All mobilephones are to be switch off duringthe assessment.You will have
access to techniques, procedures, information,resources and aids which is normally beavailableon the worksite.
Materials provided: All tools and equipment to apply paintby brush and roller,assessmentdocumentation
Materials you may need: PPE.
Information for students: You may have two (2) attempts for this assessment.
 If your first attempt is notsuccessful,your teacher will discuss your results with you and will arrangea second
attempt.
 If your second attempt is not successful,you will berequired to re-enrol in this unit.
Only one re-assessmentattempt will begranted for each assessmentitem.

You arerequired to demonstrate you have the skills and knowledgeto demonstrate you can correctly apply paintby brush
and roller to one room, at a minimum of three metres by three metres, including theceiling.
1. Choose the correct paint,roller,brushes and equipment
2. Fit and wear any PPE required
3. Prepare the work area with drop sheets and barricades if needed
4. Check you areusingthe correct colour and sheen level of paint,and stir thoroughly
5. Apply two coats of the paintwithout any runs,and evenly
6. Cut in the colour to the ceilingcarefully
7. Clean up tools and equipment
8. Store any left-over material
Activity 2 –Apply a twopack paint
To complete this task you must painta timber surfaceto a minimum of one squaremetre usingtwo-pack. The finish must
be to specification,includingin terms of defects, thickness,colour,level of opacity,finish,texture and sheen.
1. Choose the correct paint,roller,brushes and equipment
2. Prepare the work area with drop sheets and barricades if needed
3. Apply the paintwithout any runs,and evenly
4. Clean up tools and equipment
Activity 3 –Paint a Timber panel door
To complete this task you need to painta timber panel door.
1. Choose the correct paintand mix or thin it as necessary to the desired consistency.
2. Set up the area where you will paintthe door, includingbarricades if needed.
3. Remove any door furnitureor protect surroundingareas and safely stack,store,and protect any doors or components.
4. Apply the paintusingthe correct tools,followingthe correct paintsystem.
5. The finished door must be free of defects, includingruns,sags,misses.
6. You must apply at leastone oil-based application and onewater-based application.

To complete this practical task you need to painta flush door.
1. Choose the correct paintand mix or thin it as necessary to the desired consistency.
2. Set up the area where you will paintthe door, includingbarricades if needed.
3. Remove any door furnitureor protect surroundingareas and safely stack,store,and protect any doors or components.
4. Apply the paintusingthe correct tools,followingthe correct paintsystem.
5. The finished door must be free of defects, includingruns,sags,misses.
6. You must apply atleastone oil-based application and onewater-based application
Activity 5 –Paint a Timber window, architrave, andframe withmoving parts
To complete this practical task you need to painta sash window, an awningwindow, or any window with moving parts.
1. Choose the correct paintand mix or thin it as necessary to the desired consistency.
2. Set up the area where you will paint the window, includingbarricadesif needed.
3. Remove any window furniture or protect surroundingareas
4. Apply the paintusingthe correct tools,followingthe correct paintsystem.
5. The finished window must be free of defects, includingruns,sags, misses.
Activity 6 –Test Wet FilmThickness
To complete this assessmentyou must demonstrate the correct use of a wet filmgauge to check wet filmthickness.
1. Check the required wet filmthickness (WFT) on the Technical Data Sheet and record the figurebelow
2. Apply the coatingby brush,spray or roller to the surface
3. Use a wet filmgauge to measure the thickness
Activity 7 –Cleaning Up Paint Waste
To complete this task you need to demonstrate that you manage paintwaste correctly by:
1. Cleaningbrushes and rollers usingthecorrect solventfor the paint
2. Usinga waste-water reclaimingsystem.
3. Cleaningup in accordancewith environmental regulations.
4. Recycle cardboard,drums and packaging

Assessment Task Instructions for Students This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to apply brushed or rolled paint coatings to different materials to form a protective and decorative painted finish. The unit includes preparation of the work area, mixing of materials, application of paint, finishing of the surface and completion of clean-up activities. All equipment selected must be in good working order, and you must wear correct PPE throughout the entire task. You must followall safety instructions throughout the task. If at any time you are deemed to be unsafe the assessor will stop your assessment and this will be counted as your first attempt. Note: You are required to take photos of yourself undertaking this practical task. This evidence will be added to the eLearn drop box where you teacher/ assessor will be able to mark your assessment. Assessment range and conditions: Assessment will beconducted in simulated work environment at CIT Bruce under teacher supervision atall times during your normal CIT day.If at any stage the assessor deems the assessmentto be unsafeit will bestopped. Access to all resources,manual and standards is permitted. All mobilephones are to be switch off duringthe assessment.You will have access to techniques, procedures, information,resources and aids which is normally beavailableon the worksite. Choose the correct paintand mix or thin it as necessary to the desired consistency. 2. Set up the area where you will paintthe door, includingbarricades if needed. 3. Remove any door furnitureor protect surroundingareas and safely stack,store,and protect any doors or components. 4. Apply the paintusingthe correct tools,followingthe correct paintsystem. 5. The finished door must be free of defects, includingruns,sags,misses. 6. You must apply at leastone oil-based application and onewater-based application.
