• Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) starts to
be released by the pituitary gland in the brain
• The hormone travels in the blood to the
ovaries
• The egg begins to develop

• The egg signals to the
ovaries as it develops

produce the hormone
oestrogen
• This causes the lining of
the womb to build up

• The ovaries are now producing so much
oestrogen that it is detected by the brain

another hormone instead

• LH triggers ovulation – the release of the egg

uterus is shed
