3. For the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, and for
the edifying of the body of Christ … (Eph 4:12)
Many gifted saints in the preceding verse have only one ministry that is
to Minister Christ for the building up of the Body of Christ, the church.
Growing churches are active churches. Moreover, they are churches
which look outward beyond themselves in evangelism, evangelistic
activities like Gospel tracts distributing, street preaching, Gospel
campaigns, Gospel films and mega meetings-will not necessarily
result in church growth. Growing churches generally are churches
that plan for growth. Much potential is lost when evangelistic efforts
are not directed toward bringing people into the local churches.
Growing churches have a strong sense of the church as the agent for
Evangelization and nurture.
In India, many effective Evangelistic churches are able to focus on
non Christians who are brought to explicit confession of faith and
identification with Christ. Such churches maintain a clear witness and
confession of Christ but are sensitive to the needs of new converts.
They maintain lines of communication and witness keeping the door
opens for more of their people to come to faith in Christ.
Growing churches not only bring new believers into their own
fellowship, they reach out in beginning new fellowships of faith. Any
growing denomination is one that multiplies new church. Church
planting is a key to significant growth and evangelistic effectiveness.
New Congregations of new believers are most able to bring to faith
wholesectionsoftheirownpeople.Findingresponsivegroupstherefore,
it is a key to greater growth. Part of the great missionary promise of
an urban church is the possibility of identifying and evangelizing un-
reached peoples in its own city area. Urban Evangelization requires
Christians to take urban multitudes seriously, because most people fail
to understand the city since they do not know the variety and complexity
of its people. Many categories of people groups can be identified for
mission in the city. These include, for example, ethnolinguistie groups
such as professional office workers, businessmen, factory workers and
religious groups.
Since the urban poor people, many of whom have migrated from
the villages to the foot paths and slums of the cities. Preparation
for evangelization strategy includes collecting of valuable data for
understanding the task before us in the cities. Many of our current
campaigns and activities seen to net little gain, in part, no doubt, due
to a failure to strategize our thrust. We fail to focus our Evangelism. A
growing church recognizes and relies upon the Holy Spirit for power
and direction, then respond in obedient action.
Let us then arise and do His will. The Church growth principles are
many. Some may be universal, others arise from the local context.
Expanding the mission work and penetrating outreach through “Each
one Teach one and Reach ten. Give one fair chance to respond to the
Gospel, is our vision.
May the Lord will give you the right direction as you serve diligently
for the growth of the church in India.

4. And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, and eloquent
man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus (Acts 18:24)
Apollos was a Jew. Alexandria was a celebrated city of Egypt, situated
on the south-Eastern shore of the Mediterranean, which was named after
Alexander the Great who founded it. All that we are told about Apollos
gives us ample material for our study. There are several lessons that we
will learn from this man.
We should notice that Apollos was a man who possessed outstanding
gifts. He was an eloquent man and a great orator, probably even greater
than Paul. Whenever he preached, great crowds assembled to listen to
him. He was well learned and a great teacher, was mighty in the Old
Testament scriptures and had a great gift for exposition of the scriptures.
Apollos had the knowledge plus the power to express what he knew and
was instructed in the way of the Lord and fervent in Spirit.
Apollos was on fire and his enthusiasm overflowed to others. He was
diligent and accurate in his use of the Holy scriptures as the Gospel
demands on the part of its exponents. He always prepares and prosecutes
his work with prayer and care. He preached the word boldly, no more
political discourses would fall from his lips. Timothy learned from both
Paul and the Old Testament, this proves in caring for a local church,
especially in a time of the churches decline, the proclaiming of the word
is vital. (2 Tim 4:2).
Please notice that Apollos evidently had not heard the Messiah had
come; that the Lord Jesus had lived and died upon Calvary cross and
had fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy, (Isaiah 53:5-6) and had risen from the
grave and ascended to heaven. In the New Testament sense of the word,
Apollos was not a Christian, he only preached the Old Testament part of
the truth. He had great academic qualities and all that he said was true,
but he lacked the born again understanding of the spiritual life “But the
natural man does not receive the things of the spirit of God, for they
are foolishness to him and he is not able to know them because they are
discerned spiritually”. (1Cor 2:14) A soulish man is a natural man, one
who allows his soul to indulge the mind, the emotion and allows his will
to dominate his entire being and he lives by his soul, ignoring his Spirit.
He does not use his Spirit and even behaves as if he did not receive the
things of the spirit of God. He is not able to know them, but rather he
rejects them. The religious Jews, who required signs and the philosophical
Greeks are those who sought wisdom. (1 Cor 1:23)
By God’s grace Apollos was led into the full light of the Gospel by
Aquila and Priscilla who preached the Gospel to him and led him into
its full blessings! They prayerfully sought to help him and God owned
and blessed their efforts. How humble the great and eloquent Apollos
was to listen and receive instruction from Aquila and Priscilla. How
different Apollos ministry was after he himself was rejoicing in a present,
powerful, living, Saviour! Apollos did not preach the Gospel. He was like
many today consequently preaching the prosperity Gospel rather than the
Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Apollo reminds us of the great diversity of gifts in operation in the church.
The servant is nothing and that God is everything. Paul planted, Apollos
watered, but God caused the growth every believer is responsible to the
Lord for their own actions, and we must respect their Judgment.
