- What’s a Data Management Plan? A Data Management Plan (DMP) typically outlines what research data will be created during the course of a research project and how it will be created, plans for sharing and preserving the data and any restrictions that may need to be applied. Who is asking for a DMP? Some funders and some institutions ask for a DMP Researchers, generally, want help to plan the management of their data and NOT to fill out a Data Management Plan [ask audience if anyone here has had experience with filling out a DMP or helping someone fill one out] Why are DMPs changing and in what way? While there is still an open question about the efficacy of DMPs, work continues on from multiple fronts to improve them and employ them in a way that truly supports the research enterprise. Institutions are beginning to move from those long early versions of DMPs to a next generation of DMP tools and approaches that consider whether DMPs can or should be: public not private documents machine readable as well as human readable flexible living documents that can be changed through the course of a research project measurable (i.e. did researcher X do what they said they would do in their DMP?) connected to at least one other system rather than stand alone forms. A report on Machine-actionable Data Management Plans (maDMPs) by Stephanie Simms, Sarah Jones, Daniel Mietchen and Tomasz Miksa reflects collective thinking on this next generation approach.
- You got your hands dirty with a hands on exercise - what did you learn?
- The Data Management Plans (DMPs) Interest Group was formed in February 2017 and meets online on a bimonthly basis. The Group is facilitated by ANDS and open to anybody interested in DMPs, DMP tools and their effectiveness. The DMP IG seeks to answer questions about Data Management Plans such as: Why DMPs? Do they effect change? Are there alternative approaches? What DMP tools are others using? What might the next generation of DMPs look like? What voice should researchers have in their development? How do we define best practice? What’s happening internationally? Can we share learnings? The Group provides a forum for discussion about: Local DMP tools and approaches - such as the innovative Data Management Record (DMR)approach at The University of Queensland. International developments - the Group has forged links with the Research Data Alliance DMP IGand it’s DMP Common Standards and Exposing DMPs working groups.
- Are DMPs failing to produce the cultural change they aim to inspire? How effective are institutional DMP mandates? e.g. Uni Melb, Curtin Strategies to engage researchers in planning to manage their data? Learning from experiences (good and bad) e.g. Uni Melb, CSIRO Context: ARC/NHRMC (Australian research funders) do not require DMPs Tools used include DMP Online, ReDBox, simple Word documents and others. New tools and approaches are emerging e.g. UQ’s DMR What is happening internationally? Machine-actionable DMPs? Some DMP IG members have been part of the Research Data Alliance discussions and are co-chairing RDA WGs Oh and we play DMP Bingo as well!
