NEWENGLAND
New England was established in: 1607 The first permanent settlement was founded by John Winthrop British lawyer who led his expedition to establish a religious settlement, a "community of saints" that would be a model for other cities. The Puritans later settled in New England in 1628.
DEMOGRAPHICS: The New England area grew from three thousand in 1630 to 14,000 in 1640, 33,000 in 1660, 68,000 in 1680, and 91,000 in 1700. Between 1630 and 1643, about 20,000 Puritans arrived, settling near what is now known as Boston; after 1643 fewer than fifty immigrants a year arrived. The average size of a normal family in 1660-1700 was seven children; the birth rate was forty-nine babies per year per one thousand people, and the death rate was about twenty-two deaths per year per thousand people. Men only made up twenty-seven percent of the population.
The economic system was barely ok. The agriculture wasn't as great because of poor soil. Farmers barely raised enough to feed their own families, so most had to find work in fishing, whaling, logging, or trapping for fur. Also the agriculture was bad due to mountains, cold winters, and a short growing seasons. When the first colony had settled in James town, more then four million settlers arrived, many pictured the New World would give them new beginnings' and the freedom they desired. This is the time Pilgrims traveled to America. The Pilgrims wanted to be separate from the church of England. Also Puritan leaders’ went to New England because they wanted to make their religion more pure. If u didn't convert their religion you would've got punished greatly for not conforming.
How did New England relate to the Native Americans? The New Englanders traded weapons and metals to the Natives for beaver pelts. When this happened diseases were exchanged, killing off almost ninety percent of the Indian tribes. The Natives that survived soon went into debt with the New Englanders; as the beavers vanished, so did the Indians trading privileges. The Natives then sold their land to keep up with the new technology of the English.
