SILICON-CONTROLLED
RECTIFIER (SCR)
 The SCR is a four-layer structure, either p–n–p–n device, with three
terminals namely, Anode , Cathode and Gate .The gate terminal is
the control terminal that can turn ON the device.
 There are three junctions J1,J2 and J3 . In order to turn on
SCR the anode must be positive w.r.to cathode that means SCR
should be forward biased.
 SCR is a unidirectional device and that the gate current can
be only positive. The gate current can flow only in one direction i.e.
into the gate terminal
Characteristics of SCR
4
Light-Activated Silicon Controlled
Rectifiers (LASCR)
 It is an SCR whose state is controlled by the
light falling upon a silicon semiconductor layer of
the device. Thus if sufficient light falls on the
LASCR ,it will turn on otherwise it remains in the
off state.
 The basic construction of LASCR is as shown
Constructional Features
 As we focus light on the LASCR , the incident
photons will generate electrons hole pairs. The
number of optically generated electron-hole
pairs is proportional to the intensity of light.
 These electrons will constitute a gate current for
LASCR and due to the internal current
multiplication, the LASCR will be latched into its
ON state.
 The LASCR is most sensitive to light when its
gate terminal is left open.
Operation :
Semiconductor-controlled switch
(SCS):
 Few SCRs have two gate
leads, G2 attached to p2 and G1
attached to n1, as shown in Fig.
8-6. This configuration is called
the semiconductor-controlled
switch (SCS).
 The SCS, biased in the
forward-blocking state, can be
switched to the conducting state
by a negative pulse at the anode
gate n1 or by a positive current
pulse applied to the cathode gate
at p2.
Explanation of SCS:
Gate Turn Off SCR (GTO)
Explanation of GTO:
 The major disadvantage of SCR is that once they are
turned on, the gate will not have any control on
their operation.
 SCR once start conducting can be turned off by
using external turn off circuits known as
commutation circuits.
 Therefore to overcome this a new type of SCR called
gate turn off (GTO) is developed which can be
turned off by using negative gate pulse.
DIODE AC SWITCH (DIAC):
 The DIAC is a combination of two diodes. Diodes being
unidirectional devices, conduct current only in one direction.
 If bidirectional (ac) operation is desired, two Shockley diodes
may be joined in parallel facing different directions to form the DIAC.
Constructional Features
 The DIAC is basically a two terminal device. It is a parallel inverse
combination of semiconductor layers that permits triggering in
either direction.
 The two terminals are namely main terminal 1 and 2 i.e. (MT1 and
MT2 ).
 When MT1 is positive w.r.to MT2:-
The conduction takes place through the structure formed by
p1-n2-p1-n1 which is equivalent to an SCR.
 When MT2 is positive w.r.to. MT1:-
The conduction takes place through the structure formed by
which is another SCR.
I-V characteristics of the DIAC:
14
Bidirectional Triode Thyristors
(TRIAC)
 A TRIAC is a bidirectional
device i.e. a device
which allows current to
flow through it in either
direction.
Constructional Features
 TRIAC is a three terminal device , with the terminals
named as main terminals 1,2 (MT1 and MT2) and gate, out
of which gate is the control terminal.
 The TRIAC can be turned on by applying either a
positive or negative voltage to the gate with respect to
terminal MT1. whereas SCR can be triggered only by a
positive gate signal.
The characteristics of TRIAC
is same as that of two back
to back connected SCR’s.
16
V-I Characteristics
TRIAC MODES OF OPRATION:-
UNIJUNCTION TRANSISTOR
(UJT):
 The uni-junction transistor is a three-terminal single-junction
device. The switching voltage of the UJT can be easily varied.
 The UJT is always operated as a switch in oscillators, timing
circuits and in SCR/TRIAC trigger circuits.
Constructional Features:
 The UJT structure consists of a lightly doped n-type silicon bar
provided with ohmic contacts on either side.
 The two end connections are called base B1 and base B2.
 Between base B1 and base B2, the resistance of the n-type
bar called inter-base resistance (RB ).
 This inter-base resistance can be broken up into two
resistances—the resistance from B1 to the emitter is RB1 and the resistance
from B2 to the emitter is RB 2.
 Since the emitter is closer to B2 the value of RB1 is greater than
RB2.
 Total resistance is given by:
RB = RB1 + RB2
Equivalent circuit for UJT:
 The VBB source is
generally fixed and provides a
constant voltage from B2 to B1.
 The UJT is normally
operated with both B2 and E
positive biased relative to B1.
 B1 is always the UJT
reference terminal and all
voltages are measured relative
to B1 . VEE is a variable voltage
source.
UJT V–I characteristic curves:
ON State of the UJT Circuit:
 As VEE increases, the UJT stays in the OFF state until VE
approaches the peak point value V P. As VE approaches VP the p–n junction
becomes forward-biased and begins to conduct in the opposite direction.
 As a result IE becomes positive near the peak point P on the
curve. When VE exactly equals VP the emitter current equals IP .
 At this point holes from the heavily doped emitter are
injected into the n-type bar, especially into the B1 region. The bar, which
is lightly doped, offers very little chance for these holes to recombine.
 The lower half of the bar becomes replete with additional
current carriers (holes) and its resistance RB is drastically reduced; the
decrease in BB1 causes Vx to drop.
 This drop, in turn, causes the diode to become more
forward-biased and IE increases even further.
Programmable unijunction
Transistor (PUT)
• Although it has the same name as a UJT the programmable
unijunction transistor’s structure is not the same. It is actually
more similar to an SCR.
• The PUT can be “programmed” to turn on at a certain voltage
by an external voltage divider.
Equivalent circuit for PUT:
 The VBB source is
generally fixed and provides a
constant voltage from B2 to B1.
 External PUT resistors
R1 and R2 replace unijunction
transistor internal resistors RB1
and RB2, respectively.
 These resistors allow
the calculation of the intrinsic
standoff ratio η.
V-I Characteristics
Silicon Unilateral Switch(SUS)
 Fig. shows the symbolic arrangement of
SUS.SILICON UNIVARSAL COUNTER is a 4 layer
with two terminals (Anode, cathode),it is the
member of thyrister family.
OPERATION:-
 1)When positive supply voltage given to anode
terminal with respect to cathode of SUS, then if
that supply voltage is below switching
voltage(about 6 to 10 volt) then SUS becomes
off.
 2) If the applied voltage exceed the switching
voltage (6 to 10 volt),then SUS will get ON.
 3)When SUS is in ON condition at that time
voltage drop across it about 1 to 5 volt.
Explanation of sus:
SILICON BILATRAL
SWITCH(SBS)
Explanation of SBS:
 Silicon Bilateral is a 4 layer bilateral switch (SBS)
is 4 layer bilateral silicon layer with two
electrodes, It consist of two SUS connected in
antiparallel.
Operation-
 1) The SBS is the set to be forward bias, when
anode will be Positive with respect to cathode.
But this applied voltage in forward or reverse
bias condition should below the switching
voltage (6 to 10 volt).
 2)If the applied voltage exceed the switching
voltage(6 to 10 volt),then SBS will get ON, the
Voltage Drop across it about 1.7 volt.

Constructional Features:  The UJT structure consists of a lightly doped n-type silicon bar provided with ohmic contacts on either side.  The two end connections are called base B1 and base B2.  Between base B1 and base B2, the resistance of the n-type bar called inter-base resistance (RB ).  This inter-base resistance can be broken up into two resistances—the resistance from B1 to the emitter is RB1 and the resistance from B2 to the emitter is RB 2.  Since the emitter is closer to B2 the value of RB1 is greater than RB2.  Total resistance is given by: RB = RB1 + RB2
  • 20. Equivalent circuit for UJT:  The VBB source is generally fixed and provides a constant voltage from B2 to B1.  The UJT is normally operated with both B2 and E positive biased relative to B1.  B1 is always the UJT reference terminal and all voltages are measured relative to B1 . VEE is a variable voltage source.
  • 22. ON State of the UJT Circuit:  As VEE increases, the UJT stays in the OFF state until VE approaches the peak point value V P. As VE approaches VP the p–n junction becomes forward-biased and begins to conduct in the opposite direction.  As a result IE becomes positive near the peak point P on the curve. When VE exactly equals VP the emitter current equals IP .  At this point holes from the heavily doped emitter are injected into the n-type bar, especially into the B1 region. The bar, which is lightly doped, offers very little chance for these holes to recombine.  The lower half of the bar becomes replete with additional current carriers (holes) and its resistance RB is drastically reduced; the decrease in BB1 causes Vx to drop.  This drop, in turn, causes the diode to become more forward-biased and IE increases even further.
  • 23. Programmable unijunction Transistor (PUT) • Although it has the same name as a UJT the programmable unijunction transistor’s structure is not the same. It is actually more similar to an SCR. • The PUT can be “programmed” to turn on at a certain voltage by an external voltage divider.
  • 24. Equivalent circuit for PUT:  The VBB source is generally fixed and provides a constant voltage from B2 to B1.  External PUT resistors R1 and R2 replace unijunction transistor internal resistors RB1 and RB2, respectively.  These resistors allow the calculation of the intrinsic standoff ratio η.

OPERATION:-  1)When positive supply voltage given to anode terminal with respect to cathode of SUS, then if that supply voltage is below switching voltage(about 6 to 10 volt) then SUS becomes off.  2) If the applied voltage exceed the switching voltage (6 to 10 volt),then SUS will get ON.  3)When SUS is in ON condition at that time voltage drop across it about 1 to 5 volt. Explanation of sus:
  • 29. Explanation of SBS:  Silicon Bilateral is a 4 layer bilateral switch (SBS) is 4 layer bilateral silicon layer with two electrodes, It consist of two SUS connected in antiparallel. Operation-  1) The SBS is the set to be forward bias, when anode will be Positive with respect to cathode. But this applied voltage in forward or reverse bias condition should below the switching voltage (6 to 10 volt).  2)If the applied voltage exceed the switching voltage(6 to 10 volt),then SBS will get ON, the Voltage Drop across it about 1.7 volt.
