A concept note incubation cell - gearingup for 4th gen industrialisation
1. A Concept Note
Incubation Cell
Gearing-up for 4th
Gen. Industrialisation
Background
New technologies increasingly transform the way we produce, transact and consume, hence
ports and the larger supply chain can also reap the benefits of these technologies applied.
We should aim to create new value for the stakeholders in the maritime industry
by exploring new opportunities through collaborative integration of Logistic
Technology with trade and financial technology solutions. Side by side work on
objective to increase port productivity, and enhance the integration, security and
efficiencies of the supply chain logistics.
We are heading towards 4th
Generation industrial revolution, time of computer and
automation ending. World class ports are now gearing up for future technologies. They are
incubating innovative technologies and testing them in various business processes. There is a
need that major ports should also explore ways to invest in start-ups with
innovations that bring strategic value to their overall objective.
Concept:
This incubator cell would seek to invest in and nurture startups that are keen to create
innovative logistics solutions fusing information and communications technology including
IoT (Internet of Things), cloud, data analytics, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and optimisation,
as well as engineering solutions including robotics and automation in container and cargo
handling operations, and transaction solutions for the maritime trade and finance ecosystems.
This incubator program will complements ports various internal initiatives. Some innovation
programs that other world class ports working are automated-guided vehicles, crane
automation, predictive maintenance, wharf side automation, video analytics projects, adaptive
and predictive solutions to optimise operations in ports and terminals.
This program has to be supported by blueprint that will guide Major ports on which
automation and digital technologies to adopt, and enables the sharing of project details within
the Group.
Selected start-ups and technology solution providers in this incubator program shall have the
opportunity to collaborate with ports to incubate ideas and test-bed their solutions in an
unparalleled live port environment- functional port R&D living Lab. In addition, they will
receive the mentorship from Centre of Excellence through its seasoned port
professionals, resource person empanelled with IPA and other business leaders,
2. and they will be provided with the opportunity to springboard their innovations
to the maritime logistics chain through IPA network.
Similar initiative in other world class port - PSA latest invitation to potential technology
partners for 4th
gen industrialisation. They selected companies to work on developing and
test-bedding their solutions at the PSA Living Lab - two operational berths at PSA’s Pasir
Panjang Terminal in Singapore. Living Lab was jointly launched last year by MPA, EDB and
PSA for the port and logistics industry, with funding of close to S$100m committed to it over
a three-year period.
PSA evaluated 70 proposals and invested in start-ups:
HAKOVO (www.hakovo.com ) – a unique freight e-marketplace that allows small
and medium sized enterprises to collaborate in freight procurement
AutosenseAGV – a next-generation navigation solution for automated vehicles in the
port.
ClearMetal (www.clearmetal.com ) – a San Francisco based predictive logistics
company using data science and AI to unlock unprecedented efficiencies for
containerised freight.
