5. Environmental policy refers to the commitment of an
organization to the laws, regulations, and other policy
mechanisms concerning environmental issues.
These issues generally include air and water pollution,
solid waste management, biodiversity, ecosystem
management, maintenance of biodiversity, the
protection of natural resources, wildlife and
endangered species
6. The 1960s marked the beginning of modern
environmental policy making.
After the publication of Silent Spring By Rachel Carson
and 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California,
the stage had been set for change in environment.
7. In July 1970, President Nixon had signed
Reorganization Plan No. 3 calling for the establishment of
EPA .
At that time, Environmental Policy was a bipartisan issue and
the efforts of the United States of America helped spark
countries around the world to create environmental policies.
President Nixon signed the Clean Air Act in 1970 which set
the USA as one of the world leaders in environmental
conservation.
8. ISO 14001
The goals of EMS are
To increase compliance and reduce waste
Compliance is the act of reaching and maintaining
minimal legal standards. By not being compliant,
companies may face fines, government intervention
or may not be able to operate.
Waste reduction goes beyond compliance to reduce
environmental impact. The EMS helps to develop,
implement, manage, coordinate and monitor
environmental policies. Waste reduction begins at the
design phase through pollution prevention and waste
minimization. At the end of the life cycle, waste is
reduced by recycling

11. A variety of environmental problems now
affecting our Pakistan. As globalization
continues and the earth's natural
processes transform local problems into
international issues
12. Some of the largest problems now affecting the Pakistan
are:
Acid Rain
Air Pollution
Global Warming
Hazardous Waster
Ozone Depletion
Smoke
Water Pollution
Overpopulation
Rain Forest Destruction
13. Health problems (expenditure on health and production
loss due to lost working days) caused by water
pollution cost Pakistan US$ 759 million per year.
Health problems caused by air pollution cost
Pakistan US$ 301 million per year.
Loss of agricultural production due to land
degradation costs Pakistan US$ 300 million.
The cost of pollution to Pakistan economy=> US$ 2.2
BILLION PER YEAR
14. National Conservation Strategy (NCS)
National Environnemental Action Plan
(NEAP)
National Environnemental Policy (NEP)
15. (National Conservation
Strategy )
It has three Objectives
Conservation of natural resources
Sustainable development
Improved efficiency in the use and
management of resources
16. NCS
14 Core Programme Areas
A total 68 specific programmes
Each with long-term goal, expected results,
and resource investments
Rs.150.7 billion recommended investment
including Rs.52 billion from private sector
17. (National Environnemental
Action Plan )
NEAP narrows the Government's policy focus on the
environment to four core programs:
Clean Air
Clean Water
Solid Waste Management
Ecosystems Management
18. (National
Environnemental Policy )
Toprotect, conserve and restore Pakistan's environment in
order to improve quality of life of citizens through sustainable
development
OBJECTIVES
▪ Conservation and efficient management of environment
resources
▪ Integration of environmental consideration in policy
making and planning process
▪ Creation of demand for environment through mass
awareness
19. In Pakistan we also need to strengthen the motor
vehicle testing program in which private sector
should be invited to setup testing stations and it
should be made mandatory for cars to get fitness
certificate every year without which they should not
be allowed to come on roads.
20. There must be software programs developed
for registering industrial data on environment.
This program should be linked to every
industry with the Internet and it may be given
access to a centralized database in
Islamabad.
21. Demand for Environmental Managers –
There is a lot of demand for environmental
managers especially from the lenders i.e.
World Bank and ADB.
Youngsters, both male/female, should do
Masters in environmental studies as this field
has a great future in Pakistan.
22. Formulate and implement “Environmental Friendly Schools Policy”
for public and private sector to ensure the provision of best physical
school environment along with provision of safe drinking water,
sanitation, lighting, play grounds, air and noise pollution free
environment facilities, proper heating, air conditioning & ventilation
systems.
Incorporate the subject of “Environmental Science” in all classes from
primary to higher education.
Induction of “Environment Teachers” at school and college levels.
All public sector universities should launch Ph.D and M.Phil programs
in the subject of Environment to promote research in the field of
Environment.
23. Introduction of short courses / diplomas in public and private
sector universities in the field of Environment to enhance
professional capabilities.
The new educational institutes / schools should be established
off road sides at least 150 meters from road sides to save the
students from traffic noise, vehicular emissions and to avoid the
disturbance during educational activities.
Establishment of “Environment Clubs” in all educational
institutes.
Capacity building of teachers in the field of “Environmental
Management”.
24. This environmental movement is your movement and we
can fight environment degradation through a movement
because of the young people of Pakistan.
If we want to make a better Pakistan for upcoming
generation, youngsters, both male/female, should take part
actively and learn about the environmental issues and try
to tackle the problems.
One of the best solutions to the environment is to change
our bad habits of wastage of water, electricity and
dispersal of garbage etc.

was an American marine biologist and conservationist whose book Silent Spring and other writings are credited with advancing the global environmental movement.
Santa Barbara oil spill occurred in January and ;[February 1969 in the Santa Barbara Channel, near the city of Santa Barbara in Southern California. It was the largest oil spill in United States waters at the time, and now ranks third after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon and 1989 Exxon Valdez spills. It remains the largest oil spill to have occurred in the waters off California.
Environmental Protection Agency
National Conservation Strategy approved by the Cabinet in March 1992
Since 1992, NCS has served as de facto environmental policy of Pakistan.
Sustainable development
( economic development that is conducted without depletion of natural resources.)
Where was NCS developed
Check and balance of low income groups keep old vehicles that have no accurate standard of pollution controlling
Government is hardly using IT technology in this regard. Other than that, the government can also be advised that all the ministries should start adopting similar IT programs and train their staff for e-governance. In this way, the IT technology can be exploited productively.
