o Define Performance appraisal
oDescribe the purposes of performance appraisal
oDiscuss the performance standards
o It is a control process in which employees’ performance are
evaluated against standards important to the operations of an
organization.
o Ongoing process, Moves slowly, and Not people oriented
oIt consists of:
o Job description
o Performance standard
o Performance rating
o Rewards

o Motivation
o Salary Problems
o The Xerox Experience
o Other Purposes
Motivation
o Promotions, assignments, selection for education, and increased
pay are some goals that stimulate this motivation
Salary Problems
o Performance evaluation is used to determine
and provide equitable salary treatment.
o Adequate pay is the most powerful motivator
of performance, and people will not work
without it.
The Xerox Experience
o Before 1983 Xerox had a traditional appraisal system:
oNo planned objectives
oThe focus on the summary rating
oThe new system has 3 stages:
oAt the beginning of the year
oAt a mid-year
oAt year’s end
Other Purposes
oEffective appraisal generates understanding and commitment,
leading to productivity.
oCareer development and performance appraisal support each other
if they share objectives and communications.
oCan be used to confirm hiring decisions.
Performance Standard
oA standard is a unit of measurement that can serve as a reference point
for evaluating results.
oPerformance standard:
oAre derived from job analysis, descriptions, evaluation, and other documents
oAre established by authority such as ANA.
oShould be based on appropriate knowledge, and should be practical enough
to be attained.
oMust be kept up-to-date.
Performance Standard
oThe ANA Congress for Nursing Practice developed and published
standards of practice in several specialty areas.
oThe nurse manager evaluates nursing productivity with standards that
measure nursing performance.
oAccuracy and fairness of performance appraisal come from having an
objective, standards-oriented performance appraisal plan.
Summary
oPerformance appraisal is a major component of the evaluating ad
controlling function of nursing management.
o there are many purposes for performance appraisal, such as motivation
and salary problems.
oAccuracy and fairness of performance appraisal come from having an
objective, standards-oriented performance appraisal plan.
