 An effective interview can be defined as an
attempt to secure maximum amount of
information from the candidate concerning
his/her suitability for the job under
consideration.
 It tries to achieve an accurate appraisal of
the applicant in terms of his/her educational
qualification, training, family background,
previous work experience and judge the
applicant’s certain qualities like manners,
appearance, conversational ability, meet
other people pleasantly, etc.
Definition
 Selecting and hiring the best skilled candidate
that could fit in the Organizational
requirements.
 Getting the professionals hired along with their
requisite tacit skills
 Gives the candidate necessary facts and
information about the job and the organization.
 Helps establish mutual understanding between
the company and the candidate and build the
company’s image.
 Helping in achieving the desired Organizational
goals
Purpose
 The interview should have a definite time
schedule known to both the interviewers
and the interviewee.
 Interview should be conducted by the
competent, trained and experienced
interviewers.
 The interviewers should be supplied with
specific set of guidelines for conducting
interview.
 The interviewers should ensure an element
of privacy for the interviewee.
Guidelines
 A resume for all the candidates to be
interviewed should be prepared and the same
be made available to the interviewers before
the interview starts.
 The interview should not end abruptly but it
should come to close tactfully providing
satisfaction to the interviewee.
 The interviewers should show their sensitivity
to the interviewee’s sentiments and also
sympathetic attitude to him/her.
 The interviewers should also evince emotional
maturity and a stable personality during the
interview session.

 Effective interviewing skills ensure you
dramatically increase your chances of
identifying the most suitable person for the
job, the first time.
 They also have the unintended consequences
of damaging your reputation with the people
you most need to impress – high caliber
candidates.
 Interviews are widely applied and form a
significant part of many interactions among
people. They are sufficiently important for
interviewing to be regarded as a life skill.
Significance
 Identify the candidate characteristics that
should be assessed during the interview.
 Develop interview questions.
 Use the interview to provide a realistic job
preview.
 Use the interview as a selling opportunity.
 Don’t ask inappropriate questions, behave
rudely or do discrimination.
 Always give a feedback after the full
interview.

 Know your employment objective and how
it relates to the position and the employer.
 Know your educational background and
how it relates to the position and the
employer.
 Prepare to demonstrate your knowledge of
the profession and the company.
 Prepare to give reasons for your interest in
working in that profession/company.
 Develop questions in advance to ask about
the job/organization.
Tips for interviewee
 Interviewee should include his/her Career
Objective, Qualifications, Work Experience
along with roles and responsibilities.
 The matter should be written concisely and
effective and specifically related to the job
applied for.
 Your professional skills and ability should
be clearly reflected through your Resume.
 Extra curricular activities, internships,
projects done should be mentioned.

Major Points to be evaluated
 In a pharmaceuticals company vacancy in 5 posts of Area
Manager came and a committee was made for framing the
interview process to select those 5 person.
 Interviewers thought of doing something innovative and
after a slight scrutiny, they made all 30 remaining
applicants Area Manager for specific short areas for a
month.
 After a month the interviewee were told that they were on
temporary job and not in the permanent basis. They were
shocked to listen this and were asked to file a full report
of there work.
 As only few took there work seriously because that was
there work of interest and skill and the others only needed
the job, not having intention to fully bear its alongside
responsibilities.
 Then those final 5 were given a full time Job letter and
rest were asked to leave after this EFFECTIVE
INTERVIEWING.

 Mckinsey & Company conducts the interview
with the average difficulty 3.9 out of 5.
Management consultant candidates, for
instance, are asked to work through and
solve a business case. “In this situation
McKinsey is looking to see how candidates
organize their thoughts and process them to
find a solution”.
However going through a tough interview
process may be off-putting—but it could be
worth it, too. Overall, McKinsey earned an
average employee satisfaction rating of 4.3
out of 5 from its workers.

 A Boston Consulting Group candidate in
Philadelphia was asked: “If I took your resume
and removed the name at the top, what line on
your resume would make your friends read it
and recognize you?”
 P&G suggests if you have an opportunity to
speak to a recruiter or hiring manager on the
phone before you walk into an in-person
interview, ask them who you’ll be meeting
with, how long you should plan to be there,
what the interview setup will be like, and so
on.
 Big names like Google, P&G, Microsoft, and
Facebook also rank among the top 25.

In India, most reputed Job interviews are of
1 . SSB(service selection board)
Because the way the interview is being conducted
is so different. It will be conducted for five days
and those who failed to clear the 1st day will be
sent off. Those who clears it proceeds to the next
round which will be held for the next four days. It
will be surprising but our former president Dr.APJ
Abdul Kalam failed to clear SSB.
2 . UPSC
This is a Big Deal as it requires a year long
preparation at-least as clearing this exams will
give you some of the highest positions in Indian
government like IAS(Indian Administrative
Services),IPS(Indian Police Services),IFS(Indian
Foreign Services) and so on.
Applications
 Although, regardless of application, the
one-to-one face-to-face interview is the
most common form, multiple interviewers
and/or multiple interviewees will be found
in some circumstances.
 Verbal content is the main focus of
attention in most interview situations, but
non-verbal information, especially body
language, is sometimes examined.
 Limitations in the effectiveness of selection
interviewing are well established, but
interviews remain popular.
