You can improve your TOEFL score by using the strategies recommended by Dr. Pamela Sharpe, author of one of the most widely used books for TOEFL preparation. I’m Pamela Sharpe and I have been a teacher for more than 40 years. I have been helping students prepare for the TOEFL . Today I’m here to help you. Together we are going to review six strategies to improve your grammar on the Speaking section of the iBT TOEFL. Are you ready? Let’s begin.
It is not a good idea to memorize answers from the Practice Tests on this site or from any other resources. But it is a good idea to have some key phrases in mind for each of the tasks. That way, if you become very nervous, you will be able to get back on track.
Can you fill in the blanks using the key phrases for Task 1? Let me show you how. My mother is my favorite person . OR My mother is the person that I admire the most. My home town is my favorite place . OR My home town is the place that I enjoy visiting the most. My wedding ring is my favorite object . OR My wedding ring is the object that I value the most. My birthday is my favorite event . OR My birthday is the event that I enjoy the most. Reading is my favorite activity . OR Reading is the activity that I enjoy the most. In my experience, parents are the best teachers . In my view, studying abroad is the best way to learn a language . If I could meet anyone , I would like to meet Bill Gates . Now you try it. Fill in the blanks with your own information!
Here are some phrases to help you make concessions: Although text messaging is faster , I prefer to call people on my cell . Although a case could be made for text messaging , I prefer to call people on my cell . These phrases express an opinion: In my experience, technology has improved our lives because now we can communicate with people worldwide . I think that text messaging is better because a cell ring interrupts the person receiving the call . I agree that technology is an improvement because now we can communicate with people worldwide . I prefer the Internet to the local library because it provides more information .
Here are some phrases that report the opinion of another person. This person disagrees with a proposal: According to the man , the proposal costs too much money . The man objects to the proposal because it costs too much money . He favors a plan that would not increase fees . He presents three arguments against the plan . These phrases report the opinion of another person, too. This person agrees with a proposal: The woman agrees that the proposal should be implemented . The woman agrees with the policy. She explains that the change will take place over a ten-year period . The woman thinks that the plan is a good idea. She points out that the change will be gradual .
These phrases define a term: A biome is an ecosystem that is identified by the native vegetation . A variable star is a star that changes brightness periodically . Impressionism is an artistic movement that emphasized color and light . These phrases summarize a concept: According to the theory, people respond differently in public . According to the concept, products used in movies increase in popularity . According to the reading, an introvert is interested in their own thoughts and experiences . Task 5 can be planned in five sentences. Here is an example: The problem is that the woman does not have enough money to pay her fees . According to her friend , one solution is to apply for a student loan. Another possibility is to get a part-time job . I think that the best solution is to apply for the student loan because it would be difficult to work and still have enough time to study . In my opinion, the woman should go to the Office of Financial Aid before it closes today . Be careful with this plan. If you only use five sentences in your talk, you will still have half of the time left. You should include more information about the problem and include details about the possible solutions as well as your opinion.
