Mummies are preserved human or animal remains. The ancient Egyptians developed an elaborate mummification process to ceremonially preserve bodies for the afterlife. This involved removing internal organs, stuffing the body with linen and sawdust, and wrapping it in layers of linen treated with oils and resins. The finished mummy was then placed in a stone sarcophagus. The oldest mummies date back thousands of years in South America, and mummified remains were sometimes used for medicinal purposes by early cultures.

4. The Mummification
Process
1.)The body was washed and purified
It was washed with Palm Wine and rinsed with
water from the Nile

'Canopic Jars', but the heart was left in place

First the embalmers took a
brain hook and stuck it up the
nose and then began to stir the
brain around. Then they would
turn the body over and let the
brain ooze out.
A small incision was
made on the side of the
abdomen and someone
would've reached in and
pulled out the intestines,
lungs, etc.

7. 4.) The body was then put into a
naturally found salt called 'natron'
3.) The body was filled with a kind of stuffing made of linen,
leaves and sawdust, so the body would look normal
5.) In about 40-50 days the body is taken out of the 'natron'
and the original stuffing is replaced with a new one

8. 6.) The body was then covered in multiple layers of linen and
special oils were placed on the body
And then a final covering which is called a 'shroud'
7.) The finished mummy was then placed into a stone or
wooden container called a 'sarcophagus'
