         A Walk in the
            Park?

Descriptive Cataloging from Scratch

AACR2 Cataloging Areas
1. Title and Statement of
  Responsibility Area
   Includes:
Title Proper [GMD] = Parallel title ; Other titles /
      Statements of responsibility

A simpler way of organizing this information

Title proper = Parallel title : Other title

          responsibility

Area 2 Edition area

Area 3 Special area for serials, maps, music

Starting the walk
5

What with?
6

Where do we get the information from?
7

Does it make a difference?

 Compare cover and title page
8

               Dilemma
• Is “Today vegetables . . . Tomorrow
the World!” part of the title
  information?
  – AACR2 says the chief source of
    information for books, pamphlets and
other printed information is the title
    page, not the cover
9

        So, what is the title?
• The title of the book, as we would
  write it, is:
  – Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery
10

So, what’s the first area?
11

   What’s the title proper, again?
• Title proper:
  – The title proper is the chief name of an item and
includes any alternative title, but excludes
parallel titles and other title information. It is
often presented on the item in a type face distinct
from other information on the page.
     • Bibliographic Processing Cataloging Rules
12

So, what do we do with it?

    That’s easy this time!!!!
13

What other title info is there?
• No parallel or alternate titles
• But there is a subtitle—
  remember, that‟s basically what
  catalogers call “other title
  information”
14

       Other title information
• Rule 1E1: Transcribe other title
  information (for example, a subtitle)
  appearing in the chief source
  of information
• Rule 1A1: Precede other title
  information by a space, colon, space ( : )
               Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale of mystery
15

      OK—who’s responsible?
• Statement of responsibility
  – Does the title page tell us about anyone
who might have something to do with
    creating the work?
16

Rules?
17

            Notice something?
• The rule for first statement of responsibility
(1F1) doesn’t say it explicitly, but the rule for
  other statements (1F2) does:
  – “Give other statements of responsibility . . . in the
    form . . . in which they appear there . . .”
    (emphasis added).
• The convention is also to do so for first
statements of responsibility, so that we write:
  – Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale of mystery / by Deborah
and James Howe ; illustrated by Alan Daniel
18

               Complete Area 1?
                                    Bunnicula : a rabbit-
           Title proper =
Parallel title : Other tale of mystery / by
Area 1 title information Deborah and James
           [GMD] / Statement
of responsibility Howe ; illustrated by
                                    Alan Daniel

Compare BCCLS’ version:
Title: Bunnicula : a rabbit tale of
         mystery / by Deborah and
         James Howe ; illustrated by
         Alan Daniel.
19

   What’s next for Bunnicula?

OK, Bunnicula, where do we go from here?

Publication area
26

What publication info is there here?

            Place of publication: New York
            Name of publisher: Aladdin paperbacks
            Date of publication: Good question!!
27

What do we do about the date?
• Rule 4E1:
  – Give the year of publication
of the edition named in the
    edition area

 Therefore:
         1996
   Some might write:
         1996, c1979
28

Putting it all together to this point:
         Title proper = Parallel Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale
         title : Other title
                                     of mystery / by Deborah

Area 4 Publication area
                                     paperbacks, 1996.
29

OK, Bunnicula, what’s next?
30

              So, what do we do?
• Rule 5B2. Extent of books, atlases, and other printed
  items.
   – Record the number of pages in the main numbered
     sequence
   – If there is more than one numbered sequence, give the
number of pages in the order in which the sequence
     appears in each item.
   – Ignore unnumbered sequences and minor sequences.
• For Bunnicula, there is an editor‟s note numbered xi
and xii (it starts on the 11th page from the cover), and
then the main story is from 3-98 (the first page of the
story is on the 3rd page from the end of the note).
   – Some might therefore write: xii, 98 p.
   – Concise AACR2 would say simply: 98 p.
31
                                                                     31

Other details
• What other details?
  – Any illustrations?
    Yes, Bunnicula has
    several.
     • Rule 5C1) says:
       “If the bibliographic resource contains
       illustrations, give „ill.‟.”
  – Dimensions
     • Rule 5D 1) says: “Give the outside height in centimetres
(cm.) to the next centimetre up.”
        – Outside height? Measure the height of the front cover.
Bunnicula measures 19.5 cm., so round up to 20!
32

Get out your
   ruler!

      This
     is the
    vertical
    height!
33

                     Punctuation
                (Oh, oh! Here we go!)

Ignore this! It‟s only for catalog cards!
Rule 0D says: “if the description is to appear in an online catalogue in
which each area is labeled, use only the punctuation that is internal to
each area.”
34

What is the physical description, then?
• Pagination, illustration, dimensions:
  – Bunnicula?
      xii, 98 p. : ill. ; 20 cm.

        Rule 5A1: Rule 5A1:
   “Precede the other “Precede the
details (i.e., other than dimensions by a space,
extent and dimensions) semicolon, space ( ; ).”
 by a space, colon, space
           ( : ).”
35

                    Almost home!
          Title proper = Parallel
title : Other title Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale of mystery

Area 6 (Series information)
Area 7 Notes area
Area 8 Standard number
36

Is this part of a series?
• Well, yes, in one sense, because there are
  several Bunnicula books
• On the other hand, there is no specific title
  for the whole series
  – Concise AACR2 definition:
Series. A group of separate bibliographic
resources related to one another by the fact
that each bears, in addition to its own title
proper, a collective title applying to the
           group as a whole.
37

Nothing in Area 6, then?
  What about Area 7?
38

     What is “useful descriptive information”?
• Frequency
   – if a serial, i.e. magazine, etc.
                                        • Audience

• System requirements, etc. group, e.g. graduate
   – if electronic students, etc.
• Nature of the item • Summary
   – if it is not obvious from the – This does not [should not!]
rest of the description have to give away the end of
• Language the story—just be enough
to give a sense of what
   – if not English
                                             happens!
• Adaption of another work • Any special information
   – who did it? or who did the
                                          about this specific copy
     original?
                                           – Location, missing parts,
• Contents, cast list, credits, restrictions on use, etc.
  etc.
39

         Possible notes here?
• For children’s books, especially,
  summaries are often provided:
  – Though scoffed at by Harold the dog,
Chester the cat tries to warn his human
family that their foundling baby bunny
    must be a vampire.
40

What’s left, Bunnicula?
41

         Standard Number?
• ISSN for serials:
  – Magazines, journals, newspapers, etc.

• ISBN for books
  – This edition of Bunnicula?
    • ISBN 0-689-80659-0
42

          Remember also ISBN-13
• Does the ISBN-13 have any meaning imbedded in the
numbers? The five parts of an ISBN are as follows:
  1. The current ISBN-13 will be prefixed by “978”
  2. Group or country identifier which identifies a national or
     geographic grouping of publishers;
  3. Publisher identifier which identifies a particular publisher
     within a group;
  4. Title identifier which identifies a particular title or edition
     of a title;
  5. Check digit is the single digit at the end of the ISBN which
     validates the ISBN.
     • Frequently Asked Questions about the ISBN

Cataloging walk in the park

  • 1. LIB 630 Classification and Cataloging Spring 2012 A Walk in the Park? Descriptive Cataloging from Scratch
  • 2. 2 AACR2 Cataloging Areas 1. Title and Statement of Responsibility Area Includes: Title Proper [GMD] = Parallel title ; Other titles / Statements of responsibility 2. Edition Area 3. Special Area for serials, maps, etc, and music 4. Publication, Distribution, etc. Area 5. Physical Distribution Area 6. Series Area 7. Notes Area 8. Standard Number Area
  • 3. 3 A simpler way of organizing this information Title proper = Parallel title : Other title Area 1 information [GMD] / Statement of responsibility Area 2 Edition area Area 3 Special area for serials, maps, music Area 4 Publication area Area 5 Physical description Area 6 (Series information) Area 7 Notes area Area 8 Standard number
  • 6. 6 Where do we get the information from?
  • 7. 7 Does it make a difference? Compare cover and title page
  • 8. 8 Dilemma • Is “Today vegetables . . . Tomorrow the World!” part of the title information? – AACR2 says the chief source of information for books, pamphlets and other printed information is the title page, not the cover
  • 9. 9 So, what is the title? • The title of the book, as we would write it, is: – Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery
  • 10. 10 So, what’s the first area?
  • 11. 11 What’s the title proper, again? • Title proper: – The title proper is the chief name of an item and includes any alternative title, but excludes parallel titles and other title information. It is often presented on the item in a type face distinct from other information on the page. • Bibliographic Processing Cataloging Rules
  • 12. 12 So, what do we do with it? That’s easy this time!!!!
  • 13. 13 What other title info is there? • No parallel or alternate titles • But there is a subtitle— remember, that‟s basically what catalogers call “other title information”
  • 14. 14 Other title information • Rule 1E1: Transcribe other title information (for example, a subtitle) appearing in the chief source of information • Rule 1A1: Precede other title information by a space, colon, space ( : ) Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale of mystery
  • 15. 15 OK—who’s responsible? • Statement of responsibility – Does the title page tell us about anyone who might have something to do with creating the work?
  • 17. 17 Notice something? • The rule for first statement of responsibility (1F1) doesn’t say it explicitly, but the rule for other statements (1F2) does: – “Give other statements of responsibility . . . in the form . . . in which they appear there . . .” (emphasis added). • The convention is also to do so for first statements of responsibility, so that we write: – Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale of mystery / by Deborah and James Howe ; illustrated by Alan Daniel
  • 18. 18 Complete Area 1? Bunnicula : a rabbit- Title proper = Parallel title : Other tale of mystery / by Area 1 title information Deborah and James [GMD] / Statement of responsibility Howe ; illustrated by Alan Daniel Compare BCCLS’ version: Title: Bunnicula : a rabbit tale of mystery / by Deborah and James Howe ; illustrated by Alan Daniel.
  • 19. 19 What’s next for Bunnicula? Title proper = Parallel Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale of title : Other title mystery / by Deborah and Area 1 information [GMD] / James Howe ; illustrated by Statement of Alan Daniel responsibility Area 2 Edition area Special area for serials, Area 3 maps, music Area 4 Publication area Area 5 Physical description Area 6 (Series information) Area 7 Notes area Area 8 Standard number
  • 21. 21 Edition information from Bunnicula Verso (reverse) of Title Page
  • 22. 22 Writing the edition statement • Therefore: – 1st Aladdin paperbacks ed., August, 1996
  • 23. 23 The story so far . . . Title proper = Parallel Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale title : Other title of mystery / by Deborah Area 1 information [GMD] / Statement of and James Howe ; responsibility illustrated by Alan Daniel 1st Aladdin paperbacks Area 2 Edition area ed., August, 1996
  • 24. 24 OK, Bunnicula, where do we go from here? Title proper = Parallel Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale of title : Other title mystery / by Deborah and Area 1 information [GMD] / James Howe ; illustrated by Statement of Alan Daniel responsibility 1st Aladdin paperbacks ed., Area 2 Edition area August, 1996 Special area for serials, This is neither map, magazine Area 3 maps, music nor music Area 4 Publication area Area 5 Physical description Area 6 (Series information) Area 7 Notes area Area 8 Standard number
  • 26. 26 What publication info is there here? Place of publication: New York Name of publisher: Aladdin paperbacks Date of publication: Good question!!
  • 27. 27 What do we do about the date? • Rule 4E1: – Give the year of publication of the edition named in the edition area Therefore: 1996 Some might write: 1996, c1979
  • 28. 28 Putting it all together to this point: Title proper = Parallel Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale title : Other title of mystery / by Deborah Area 1 information [GMD] / Statement of and James Howe ; responsibility illustrated by Alan Daniel. 1st Aladdin paperbacks Area 2 Edition area ed., August, 1996. Special area for serials, Area 3 maps, music New York : Aladdin Area 4 Publication area paperbacks, 1996.
  • 30. 30 So, what do we do? • Rule 5B2. Extent of books, atlases, and other printed items. – Record the number of pages in the main numbered sequence – If there is more than one numbered sequence, give the number of pages in the order in which the sequence appears in each item. – Ignore unnumbered sequences and minor sequences. • For Bunnicula, there is an editor‟s note numbered xi and xii (it starts on the 11th page from the cover), and then the main story is from 3-98 (the first page of the story is on the 3rd page from the end of the note). – Some might therefore write: xii, 98 p. – Concise AACR2 would say simply: 98 p.
  • 31. 31 31 Other details • What other details? – Any illustrations? Yes, Bunnicula has several. • Rule 5C1) says: “If the bibliographic resource contains illustrations, give „ill.‟.” – Dimensions • Rule 5D 1) says: “Give the outside height in centimetres (cm.) to the next centimetre up.” – Outside height? Measure the height of the front cover. Bunnicula measures 19.5 cm., so round up to 20!
  • 32. 32 Get out your ruler! This is the vertical height!
  • 33. 33 Punctuation (Oh, oh! Here we go!) Ignore this! It‟s only for catalog cards! Rule 0D says: “if the description is to appear in an online catalogue in which each area is labeled, use only the punctuation that is internal to each area.”
  • 34. 34 What is the physical description, then? • Pagination, illustration, dimensions: – Bunnicula? xii, 98 p. : ill. ; 20 cm. Rule 5A1: Rule 5A1: “Precede the other “Precede the details (i.e., other than dimensions by a space, extent and dimensions) semicolon, space ( ; ).” by a space, colon, space ( : ).”
  • 35. 35 Almost home! Title proper = Parallel title : Other title Bunnicula : a rabbit-tale of mystery Area 1 information [GMD] / / by Deborah and James Howe ; Statement of illustrated by Alan Daniel responsibility 1st Aladdin paperbacks ed., August, Area 2 Edition area 1996 Special area for serials, Area 3 maps, music 1st Aladdin paperbacks ed., August, Area 4 Publication area 1996. xii, 98 p. : ill. ; 20 cm. Area 5 Physical description Area 6 (Series information) Area 7 Notes area Area 8 Standard number
  • 36. 36 Is this part of a series? • Well, yes, in one sense, because there are several Bunnicula books • On the other hand, there is no specific title for the whole series – Concise AACR2 definition: Series. A group of separate bibliographic resources related to one another by the fact that each bears, in addition to its own title proper, a collective title applying to the group as a whole.
  • 37. 37 Nothing in Area 6, then? What about Area 7?
  • 38. 38 What is “useful descriptive information”? • Frequency – if a serial, i.e. magazine, etc. • Audience – grade level, age, a specific • System requirements, etc. group, e.g. graduate – if electronic students, etc. • Nature of the item • Summary – if it is not obvious from the – This does not [should not!] rest of the description have to give away the end of • Language the story—just be enough to give a sense of what – if not English happens! • Adaption of another work • Any special information – who did it? or who did the about this specific copy original? – Location, missing parts, • Contents, cast list, credits, restrictions on use, etc. etc.
  • 39. 39 Possible notes here? • For children’s books, especially, summaries are often provided: – Though scoffed at by Harold the dog, Chester the cat tries to warn his human family that their foundling baby bunny must be a vampire.
  • 41. 41 Standard Number? • ISSN for serials: – Magazines, journals, newspapers, etc. • ISBN for books – This edition of Bunnicula? • ISBN 0-689-80659-0
  • 42. 42 Remember also ISBN-13 • Does the ISBN-13 have any meaning imbedded in the numbers? The five parts of an ISBN are as follows: 1. The current ISBN-13 will be prefixed by “978” 2. Group or country identifier which identifies a national or geographic grouping of publishers; 3. Publisher identifier which identifies a particular publisher within a group; 4. Title identifier which identifies a particular title or edition of a title; 5. Check digit is the single digit at the end of the ISBN which validates the ISBN. • Frequently Asked Questions about the ISBN
