Hurricane is the name
given to tropical
cyclones in some parts
of the world.
It is a violent tropical
storm with winds
spiraling around a
nucleus, called the eye.
4. WHAT HAPPENED?
• It began as a tropical wave from Africa and
moved across the ocean to the Caribbean Sea.
• Mitch began to organize in the north of
Colombia.
• It became a tropical depression, it moved
slowly to the west until it became a tropical
storm.
• It began to intensify quickly and became a
category 5 hurricane.
5. • It moved along the coast of Nicaragua and Honduras.
When it landed, the hurricane began to fall and became
a tropical depression over Guatemala.
• Mitch was reorganized in Bay of Campeche. It first
passed over Yucatan and then through the southeastern
Gulf of Mexico.
• Mitch landed in Florida for the last time, became extra
tropical storm, and accelerated in the North Atlantic.

8. DEAD AND MISSING PEOPLE
o Mitch is responsible for over nine thousand deaths
predominantly from rain-induced flooding in parts of
Central America.
o The death toll also included 31 fatalities caused by the
sinking of the cruiser Fantome.
o Another 9191 persons were listed as missing.
o In the wake of Hurricane Mitch, there were outbreaks of
diseases in Central America, including
cholera, leptospirosis and dengue.
9. OTHER HURRICANES
• Hurricane Katrina was one of the most deadly
tropical cyclones, destructive and costly to has
impacted America in decades.
• Hurricane Wilma was the twenty-first tropical
storm and twelfth hurricane of the Atlantic
hurricane season in 2005.

11. WHAT CAN I DO?
• Check you the stability of your building or home.
• Secure the roof of your house to the structure.
• Check your home installations, electricity, water, gas,
health, etc..
• Be located where is the police, the hospital or health
center nearest you, and their phone numbers.
• toxic or flammable products should be placed in areas
where it is impossible to have any leaks or cause a fire.
• If you have trees near your home, make sure they are
pruned or cause danger.
• Clean the external pipe and make sure they are secure.
• Plan an evacuation route that all the family knows.
• Keep a "kit" for these emergency cases.
