During the 13th-15th centuries in Europe, known as the Renaissance period, society was stratified with nobles, merchants, and peasants. Wealthy families supported great artists and inventors like Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Shakespeare. Men generally had more opportunities and power than women, who were largely confined to domestic duties and child-rearing. Life was also difficult for many, as the population faced challenges such as the Bubonic Plague, famine, and ongoing wars.
The renaissance started in Northern Italy during the 14 th century, and it spread through out Europe. Europeans experienced an interest in learning science, math, literature, the arts and philosophy. Great achievements were made by men and women; in art, literature, science, exploration and philosophy.
Michelangelo- Italian painter of the Sistine Chapel and sculptor of the famous statue of David Galileo- Used the telescope to prove that the earth rotated on its axis Leanardo Da Vinci- Italian painter of the Mona Lisa and an inventor Shakespeare- English writer of Romeo and Juliet , and Hamlet .
Nobles- owned most of the land and lived in large estates outside the city Merchants- were the newly rich. They became wealthy in industries like wool processing, boat making and banking Middle Class- were the shopkeepers and professionals Lower Class- were the workers Peasants- made up 90% of Europe’s population. earned their living by growing crops and raising animals on land that belonged to others
Jousting- is a sport. When two mounted knights would charge at each other and try to knock eachother off the horse.
The Bubonic Plague- is also known as the black death. It was one of Europe's biggest catastrophes during the Renaissance. It killed a third of Europe’s population. The Great Famine was widespread food shortage across Europe. The hundered years war was war fought between Britain and France.
