Carpet Care 101: Your Guide to Common Spills & Stains
1. It happens to the best of us: Dealing with Spills
and Stains
It's inevitable. Sooner or later you will
experience spills and stains on your carpets
and rugs. Unfortunately, all too often, the
offending spiller either doesn't realize what's
happened, or just doesn't speak up. You're
left finding a stain hours, even days later.
We can't help you get every stain our of your
rugs and carpets on your own, but we can
offer some practical advise for when the
inevitable happens.
2. Building and Using
YOUR FIRST AID KIT:
The first step is to set yourself up for
success. Because not all stains are equal,
you'll need to keep a few things on hand
at all times. We suggest keeping it all in
one location in a small basket, tote or
other container. We'll call it your Carpet
Care Fist Aid Kit.
3. Here's what you'll need:
Enzyme detergent
Ammonia - 1 part to 3 parts water
Neutral detergent - 1 tablespoon laundry detergent to 1 pint of water
Solvent cleaner - De-Solve-It
White vinegar - 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water
A small brush for removing spots - do not rub pot too hard or distortion of
carpet will occur
Blotting material - sponge and solid white paper towels
Spot removal procedures -
Here is the basic process to follow when dealing with spills and stains:
The Longer the spot sets, the greater chance of a permanent stain.
Blot up as much of the liquid as possible with a white paper towel. Paper towels
with printed designs will transfer color onto the carpet.
Apply pressure on the towel to absorb more of the spot.
Repeat the step several times, turning the towel to dry place each time.
Drying
Dry carpet as completely as possible immediately after spotting to avoid other
damage. Direct a stream of air from fan, a wet vacuum, or hair dryer to hasten
drying.
4. Beer:
Apply cool solution of enzyme
detergent with sponge. Allow ten minutes for
the solution to work. Blot with cool water and a
white paper towel.
Blood:
Apply a cool solution of enzyme
detergent with a sponge. Allow ten minutes of
the solution to work. Blot with cool water and a
white paper towel.
Candle wax:
Scrape off excess wax with a dull knife.
Lay a white paper towel over the candlewax and with a
blow dryer, blow hot air on the towel. The heat will melt the
wax and the towel will absorb. Clean with solvent solution if
spot remains.
Candy:
Apply detergent solution then blot with water. If
spot remains, apply vinegar, then blot with water.
Chewing gum:
Freeze spot with ice cubes, then
shatter with a blunt object. Vacuum out chips. apply a
solvent solution, wait several minutes, then blot with water
solution.
5. Chocolate: Apply a cool solution of enzyme detergent with a sponge. Allow ten minutes for the
solution to work. Blot with cool water and white paper towel.
Cigarette burns:
Can be partially remedied by clipping off the blackened ends with sharp
scissors, then working in detergent solution and blotting with water.
Coffee/Tea: Apply a detergent solution and blot with cool
water. If stain persists, apply vinegar solution and blot with
water.
Crayons: Remove as much as possible by breaking loose
with a blunt object, then vacuum out. apply a small amount
of solvent cleaner, then blot the crayon with white paper
towel. If spot persists, apply a neutral detergent solution and
blot.
6. Fruit juice: Sponge immediately with cool water. Apply a
detergent solution and blot with water. Apply an ammonia
solution, agitate, then blot with water.
Glue, Elmer's household glue: Blot with warm water.
Sponge with detergent solution. If stain persists, treat with a
solvent cleaning solution and blot with water.
Grease/Oil: Sponge with solvent solution. Apply detergent
solution and blot with water.
Ice Cream: Sponge freely with cool water. Apply detergent
solution and blot with water.
Ink: Apply a solvent solution to a sponge and blot lightly to
keep ink from spreading. Blot with water.
Ketchup: Apply detergent solution mixed with cool water,
then blot with water. If spot remains, apply ammonia solution,
then blot with water.
7. Lipstick: Apply a solvent solution to sponge and blot lightly, then blot
with water.
Milk: Apply a cool solution of enzyme detergent with a sponge.
Allow ten minutes for the solution to work. Blot with cool water and
white paper towel.
Mud: Let dry, then brush. Rinse repeatedly with cool water.
Mustard:
Apply a detergent solution. Blot with water. It is
possible that stain will remain. Mustard is very difficult to remove
from carpets.
Paint:
Sponge with solvent. Blot with water. Apply detergent
solution and blot with water.
Rust:
Will usually require professional cleaning service for
removal, but fresh stain can be helped by working detergent
solution into spot and blotting with water.
8. Shoe Polish: Sponge and blot immediately. If stain persists, call your
Rainbow International specialist.
Soft Drinks:
Sponge immediately with
cool water. Apply detergent solution and
blot pop with water. Apply an ammonia
solution, agitate, then blot with water.
Tar: Sponge with solvent. Bot. Apply detergent solution
and blot with water.
Urine: Sponge with cool water. Apply enzyme detergent
into stain and blot with water. Apply vinegar solution and
blot with water.
Vomit:
Sponge with cool water. Apply enzyme
detergent solution and let stand for ten minutes. Blot with
water.
Wine:
Apply detergent solution and blot. If stain persists,
apply an ammonia solution, then blot. If stain persists,
apply vinegar solution, then blot with water
9. IMPORTANT REMINDER: Most of today's residential carpet is
warranted against common household food and drink spills.
The carpet fiber producer gives certain guidelines to follow in
the event of a spill. If these guidelines are not followed, you are
at risk of voiding your warranty. It is recommended that in the
event of a spill, you contact a professional carpet cleaning
specialist to assure your warranty is kept intact.
