Oculus Rift
Virtual reality is changing the face of healthcare
By Philip Storer
The digital department at Navicor
recently received its Oculus Rift DK2.
For those of you who prefer sunlight
and human interaction over living in
your parents’ basement dreaming of
being a video game tester, the DK2 is
the latest iteration of a revolutionary
new virtual reality technology primarily
used for gaming. I can forgive anyone
for wondering what an oncology
advertising agency would be doing
with a virtual reality headset because
many people asked the same thing of
Facebook when Mark
Zuckerberg acquired the technology
for 2 billion dollars. To answer the
question of what Facebook would do
with the technology, Zuckerberg
stated, “Imagine... consulting with a
doctor face-to-face—just by putting on
goggles in your home.”
Interestingly, it would seem that
Zuckerberg’s imagined reality is now
coming to fruition. The Moveo
Foundation relevantly released a
promotional video of the world’s first
Oculus Rift surgery for the purpose of
training new surgeons. This surgery
features a French orthopedic surgeon
filming a total hip replacement with 3-D
cameras attached to his head. In the
CORTHOUGHTS
“This project
uses virtual
reality to
improve
surgical
training by
putting the
trainee into
the shoes of
the surgeon”

video, Dr. Thomas Gregory states,
“When you are surgeon in training,
you have to know a lot of surgery
procedures but you are rarely in the
place of the primary surgeon. This
project uses virtual reality to improve
surgical training by putting the trainee
into the shoes of the surgeon.” Check

At Navicor, we have a few ideas on
how this new technology can be used
for oncology communications. For
instance, this past SXSW
featured an Oculus Rift that allowed
participants to step into the world of
HBO’s Game of Thrones. Attendees
stood in line for over 2 hours as news
of the Oculus experience spread
throughout the event. We imagine
this same kind of reaction to the
virtual reality technology at a show
like ASCO. Who will be the first to
see their mechanism of action come
to life using this mind-blowing
technology?
