• An author’s purpose for writing a text is the
reason why he or she decided to write a
selection.
• The three main reasons an author chooses to
write is to entertain, inform, or persuade

3. To Entertain
Author’s Purpose: to entertain others with
something interesting or enjoyable
Examples: realistic fiction, fantasy, poetry

4. To Inform
Author’s Purpose: to give the reader facts and
information
Examples:
nonfiction, biography, textbooks, how-to
books, newsletters

5. To Persuade
Author’s Purpose: to convince another person to
agree with the author’s point of view
Examples: advertisements, letters to the editor
of a newspaper
