Muscles are the contractile tissue in the body that allows for movement. They are composed of bundles of cells called muscle fibers that contain contractile filaments of actin and myosin that slide past each other, causing the muscle to contract. Muscles are attached to bones by tendons and work antagonistically in pairs to control movement through flexion and extension.
