““ You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah (ProphetYou have indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Prophet

anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and whoanyone whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who

Condition of the recite:
purity, politeness and quietness, facing the Qiblah
Amount to be recited – not forgetting to ensure understanding
what is being recited. Although you may not know Arabic, today
there are translations available (admittedly translation may not be
perfect, yet it can give some understanding of the meaning of the
Qur’an).
Recite it in slow and distinct manner (tartil) - middle tone-
Tajwid, makhraj, qalqalah, etc - beautify it melodiously.

To weep while reading the Quran
Fulfil the right (Haqq) of the verses recited :
eg. Saida (prostration), du’a (supplication), ta’awuz (seeking
protection of Allah), appropriate responses, etc..

Begin with:
““ A-’uu-A-’uu-dzdzu - bil-laa - his – sa-mii- ’il – ‘aleem,u - bil-laa - his – sa-mii- ’il – ‘aleem,
mi-nash – shay -mi-nash – shay - twtwaa – nir – ra - jeemaa – nir – ra - jeem
I seek refuge with Allah Who hears and knows all,
from the accursed Satan.
Ending with:
““ swswa – da – qal - laah – hul - ’a-a – da – qal - laah – hul - ’a-zzeem”eem”
Allah the Most Esteemed has spoken the TruthAllah the Most Esteemed has spoken the Truth

““Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and theIndeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the
alternation of the night and the day are signs for those ofalternation of the night and the day are signs for those of

“And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be
lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or
female; you are of one another.”

in My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove from them theirin My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove from them their

Some merely regard the mere verbalising from the Qur’an as
enough but does not go further into making efforts to understanding
the message and implementing it. Allah admonishes us:

“The best amongst you is one who learns the Qur’an
and who teaches it”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary)

Why does it begin with “Why does it begin with “O You who have attained to faithO You who have attained to faith”? what is”? what is

The state of consciousness that we are in, ascertain our attitude ofThe state of consciousness that we are in, ascertain our attitude of
behaviour. By the warning “behaviour. By the warning “do not put yourself forward before Allahdo not put yourself forward before Allah
and His Messengerand His Messenger”, do you think that this concerns others more than”, do you think that this concerns others more than
you? Who is the one directly reading this verse? How often have weyou? Who is the one directly reading this verse? How often have we
forgotten that as Muslims, a higher law rules over us at every occasion?forgotten that as Muslims, a higher law rules over us at every occasion?

Consider the times when our considerations exclude Allah and HisConsider the times when our considerations exclude Allah and His
Messenger s.a.a.w. In such circumstances, how would our behaviour beMessenger s.a.a.w. In such circumstances, how would our behaviour be

Remain conscious of Allah – a key state of consciousness. Our mindsRemain conscious of Allah – a key state of consciousness. Our minds

““O you who have attained to faith! Do not raise your voicesO you who have attained to faith! Do not raise your voices
above the voice of the Prophet, and neither speak loudly toabove the voice of the Prophet, and neither speak loudly to
him, as you would speak loudly to one another, lest all yourhim, as you would speak loudly to one another, lest all your
[good] deeds come to nought without your perceiving it.”[good] deeds come to nought without your perceiving it.”

Although the Prophet s.a.w is no more around, yet we know that
the words of the Quran remains relevant until the end of the world.
In spite of the fact that our Prophet may not be physically present,
yet Allah s.w.t. deems it necessary still, to record this to posterity. He
was appointed by Allah to bear witness over his ummah, and we as
Muslims must ask ourselves, how would our prophet s.a.w. rate our
behaviour?

Muslims are ever mindful that our life is to bear witness to two
realities : “Allah and His Messenger.” Our conduct is always
measured with this reality in mind, how should we behave in Allah's
presence and in the presence of His messenger, when we claim to be
Muslims?
Our speech and voice, speaking loudly and carelessly, reveals our
inner state, our inclination towards relying upon our ego & desire
(Nafsul-‘Ammara and Hawa’). This brashness, often may be the way
we speak to one another, does not assist us in forming our disposition
and gaining higher consciousness.

How is the tone of voice related to the possibility of losing the
goodness of our deeds?
The speech is the most conspicuous means of our expression, yet
it can betray much of who or what we are. We may not be conscious
of this because our tongues seem to be directly linked to our
emotions and our Nafsul-‘Ammarah.
Are we always conscious of this whenever we speak?

““And turn not thy cheek away from people in [false] pride, and walk notAnd turn not thy cheek away from people in [false] pride, and walk not
haughtily on earth: for, behold, Allah does not love anyone who, out ofhaughtily on earth: for, behold, Allah does not love anyone who, out of
self- conceit, acts in a boastful manner. Hence, be modest in thy bearing,self- conceit, acts in a boastful manner. Hence, be modest in thy bearing,
and lower thy voice: for, behold, the ugliest of all voices is the [loud] voiceand lower thy voice: for, behold, the ugliest of all voices is the [loud] voice
of asses…”of asses…”

““Go (then), you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in MyGo (then), you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in My
remembrance. Go forth, both of you, unto Pharaoh: for, verily, he hasremembrance. Go forth, both of you, unto Pharaoh: for, verily, he has
transgressed all bounds of equity! But speak unto him in a mild mannertransgressed all bounds of equity! But speak unto him in a mild manner

A saying from Imam ‘Ali (karramAllaahu wajhah) :
““The tongue of the wise is behind his heart,The tongue of the wise is behind his heart,
(whereas) the heart of the fool is behind his tongue.”(whereas) the heart of the fool is behind his tongue.”

WA-QAL-BUL – AWA-QAL-BUL – AHH – MAQ, WA-RA - A – LISAA - NIH– MAQ, WA-RA - A – LISAA - NIH

A caravan from the tribe of Bani Tamim seeking prophet
s.a.w.’s advise as to who among them should be their leader.
Two prominent companions began to offer their suggestions
which lead to differences of opinion which intensified into an
argument with raised voices.
On that occasion this verse was revealed. Both of them felt
that this verse was directed at them and were repentant.
AS-BAAB – AL-NUZULAS-BAAB – AL-NUZUL OF SURAH HUJURAT 46 VERSE 2

A companion by the name of Tsabit ibn Qays, who were among
them, after hearing this verse, left, and kept himself in his house
weeping and crying for several days. People began to notice his
absence, until the Prophet s.a.w. that came to know about it,
summon for him.
When asked as to the reason for this, Tsabit ibn Qays explained:
“It is concerning that verse which warned us not to raise our voices
above yours. O Messenger of Allah.... for (you see) I have a very loud
voice. I am worried that because of this, all my deeds would be
void.”

The prophet s.a.w. then said, “You are not that person whom
this verse is speaking about. You will live and die in righteousness.”
Regarding this Tsabit ibn Qays, when a verse came saying that
Allah does not like those who are proud and arrogant, he came to
the Prophet s.a.w. crying. He was worried for himself since he is
always leading his tribesman. He was very concerned that perhaps
Allah was referring to him.

Such was the sensitivity shown by this companion whom the
Prophet s.a.w always gave assurance to him that he is not the one
who is being said by the verse. On the contrary, he, Tsabit ibn Qays,
was destined to be amongst those honoured by Allah s.w.t. It was in
the campaign during a battle in Yamamah that Tsabit ibn Qays was
bestowed with Shaheed (martyrdom). Even after this there were
signs of his Karamah (bestowal of miracles upon the righteous). One
of his companions dreamt of him giving specific instructions as to
settle some of his previous debts.

Scholars of Hadith said that it was never known whether there
is any other Muslim who was able to give “wasiyat” (last
testament) after their death, except for Tsabit ibn Qays r.a.
extracted from “Tafsir al-Durr-al-Mantsur 7: 546-550

““Behold, they who lower their voices in the presence of Allah’sBehold, they who lower their voices in the presence of Allah’s
Messenger - it is they whose hearts Allah has tested [and opened]Messenger - it is they whose hearts Allah has tested [and opened]
to consciousness of Himself (to consciousness of Himself (TAQWATAQWA); [and] theirs shall be); [and] theirs shall be
forgiveness and a reward supreme.”forgiveness and a reward supreme.”

““Verily, [O Prophet,] as for those who call thee from without thyVerily, [O Prophet,] as for those who call thee from without thy
private apartments - most of them do not use their reason:”private apartments - most of them do not use their reason:”

“And if they had been patient until you [could] come out to
them, it would have been better for them. But Allah is
Forgiving and Merciful.”
(Qur’an: Hujurat: 49: 5)

Signs or test of those who withSigns or test of those who with TAQWATAQWA
OurOur ulamaulama' (heirs of the prophet s.a.a.w.) uses their observation of' (heirs of the prophet s.a.a.w.) uses their observation of
ADABADAB in speech too, as a yardstick to measure whether students havein speech too, as a yardstick to measure whether students have
been educated or not. Allah s.w.t. alludes to this aspect for thebeen educated or not. Allah s.w.t. alludes to this aspect for the
Prophet s.a.a.w. regarding the demeanour of those who met him:Prophet s.a.a.w. regarding the demeanour of those who met him:
""Those that lower their voice in the presence of Allah's Messenger―Those that lower their voice in the presence of Allah's Messenger―
their hearts has Allah tested for piety: for them is Forgiveness and atheir hearts has Allah tested for piety: for them is Forgiveness and a
great Rewardgreat Reward.”.”

Like-wise, it is to be expected that those whose hearts has not yetLike-wise, it is to be expected that those whose hearts has not yet
pass the standard would display uncouth manners, due to theirpass the standard would display uncouth manners, due to their
ignorance and lack ofignorance and lack of Swobr’Swobr’ (patience & perseverance).(patience & perseverance).
The Prophet s.a.a.w., as also the Islamic scholars, would patientlyThe Prophet s.a.a.w., as also the Islamic scholars, would patiently
overlook this in their students, out of concern for their reform (overlook this in their students, out of concern for their reform (islaHislaH) –) –
and most of the time having to endure such ill-mannered behaviour.and most of the time having to endure such ill-mannered behaviour.

Thus although they endure such attitude from their students orThus although they endure such attitude from their students or
followers, but all is still not lost, for Allah s.w.t. continues withfollowers, but all is still not lost, for Allah s.w.t. continues with
this assurance:"this assurance:"but Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.but Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.""

Always remembering to follow the example of our Prophet’sAlways remembering to follow the example of our Prophet’s akhlaqakhlaq::
““And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by thatAnd not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that
[deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and[deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and
him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. But nonehim is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. But none
is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it exceptis granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except
one having a great portion [of good].”one having a great portion [of good].”

“Endure, then, with patience (all that they may say] -always
remembering that it is none but Allah who gives thee the strength
to endure adversity -and do not grieve over them, and neither be
distressed by the false arguments which they devise.”
(Qur’an: An-Nahlu: 16: 127)

they would indeed have broken away from you. Pardon them,they would indeed have broken away from you. Pardon them,

in all matters of public concern; then, when you have decided uponin all matters of public concern; then, when you have decided upon
a course of action, place your trust in Allah: for, verily, Allah lovesa course of action, place your trust in Allah: for, verily, Allah loves

ALLAA-HUM-MAR – HAM-NI - BIL – QUR- ‘AA-N

MIN – HU-MAA - JA – HIL -TUMIN – HU-MAA - JA – HIL -TU
““Remind me of that which I have forgotten, teach me thoseRemind me of that which I have forgotten, teach me those

WAR – ZUQ – NEE – TI – LAA – WA - TA – HU
AA – NA – AL – LAI – LI - WA – ATW
TRAA – FA - AN - NA - HAAR

“And make it as argument point in my favour,
O Lord of all the worlds.”

“O Allah, make my speech be guidance, inspire me with
reverential fear, give me success in that which is most
pure, and employ me in what is most pleasing to Thee!
O Allah, let me tread the most exemplary path and make
me live and die in Thy creed!
O Allah, bless Muhammad and his Household, give me to
enjoy moderation, make me into one of the people of
right behaviour, the proofs of right conduct, and the
servants of righteousness,"
