 You just moved to your grandparents’ home
in Nebraska. They invite you to go on a trip to
    your new immigrant neighbors, the
    Shimerdas, from the Czech Republic.

 You‘re at the Shimerdas and you meet
Antonia, a brown eyed 14-year-old beautiful
girl, her younger sister, Yulka, their father, Mr.
    Shimerda, their mother, Mrs. Shimerda,
Krajiek their translator, and Ambrosch. You
find out that they were cheated out of a lot of
money during their move here. Mr. Shimerda
asks you to give his two daughters English
    lessons.

 You become friends with Antonia and spend
    many days together. However, throughout
the winter, the Shimerdas borrow a lot from
you and your family. Mr. Shimerda commits
suicide and then the Shimerdas begin to
damage your belongings. Eventually Jake and
Ambrosch get in a fight and Jake punches
    him in the nose.

 A year goes by and your family begins to start
to talk to the Shimerdas again. You and
Antonia begin to socialize and go walking
more and more. But school has started so
time is harder to find now. Antonia explains
to you how your family is going to have it
much easier than hers. Three years go by and
your family asks you if you want to move
    back to Black Hawk.
NO YES

 In Black Hawk, you begin to attend school
again. Your nearest neighbors, the Harlings,
lose their cook and your father convinces
them to hire Antonia. At one point, Lena
Lingard, another worker girl, announces to
Antonia and you that she has gained a
position at a local dressmaking shop. She
invites you to come and see her more often at
    work.

 You go and see Lena and gossip with her after
work. Winter and Christmas season comes
and you turn your interests to indoor
activities. One of these includes dancing with
Antonia and Lena after dark in the Boys’
home. Italians come into town and begin a
    dancing club during the evenings.

 After your highschool graduation where you
dedicate your speech to Antonia’s father. You
find your summers filled with preparation for
further studies. Antonia calls you because she
is feeling uneasy about spending the night
    alone in the Cutter’s home.

 Mr. Cutter ends up coming back in order to
attempt to seduce or rape Antonia. You get away
after jumping out a window and running back to
your own home. You begin University studies
and the man that you become close with there,
Cleric, informs you that you can accompany him
to Harvord College. Your grandfather agrees.
However, during this time you have become
close with Lena again and see plays and socialize
    with her.

 You finish your studies at Harvard and you go
back to the country to visit all of your old
friends. When sitting for a ph0tograph with
your grandparents you see the picture of
Antonia’s baby. You have time to go visit
some people in the country. You know that
Widow Stevens could give you some
    information about Antonia.

 Twenty years later you come to visit Antonia.
All of the awkwardness fades away as you
and Antonia discuss the old days. You
discover that Antonia is happy now farming
like she always had, and you tell her about
your new domestic life. As you leave you find
the road that you used to take, and you sit
down watching the haystacks as the sun sets.
 Throughout the novel, Jim matures from
being an orphan-boy to a independent adult.
His nostalgic descriptions of the Nebraskan
farm life make the memoir of his past that
much better. He learns about social hierarchy
after siding with the worker-girls during his
school-life, and goes through the “rebellious”
age during his teen years. After he moves out,
he becomes a successful lawyer but never
    forgets about his young life.
 You and your family move to Nebraska. You
know very little English and while going there
you and your family were taken advantage of
    when buying goods from American
merchants. You meet the Burdens and a
young boy named Jim who is a couple years
younger than you. Your family wants you to
    learn more English from him.

and Jim to go and see Pavel, a dying Russian
    man.

still invites you for a ride.

 Jim gives you his coat and as a result gets sick
for the following two weeks. The next time
you see him is when his family came to you in
order to give you a gift of food. You are too
embarrassed and run crying inside. Your
mother explains to them that you were not
beggars in Bohemia. It is almost New Years
and your mother asks you if you wish to go
    and see Jim.

 It’s new years’ day and you are at Jim’s house.
You and Jim get into an argument over your
family’s situation. A little while goes by and
your father commits suicide, which leaves
you with most of the farm work for your
family. Jim comes one day and asks you if you
would like to attend school with him.

 You and Jim see less and less of each other as
the school year progresses. Your family
begins to borrow things from the Burdens.
You take good care of the items but you hear
that Jake has punched Ambrosh in the nose
because Jake believes that you haven’t been
    taking good care of them.

 Even though your family remains proud of
the incident, you realize you must get some

much of the summer with Jim including a
night when you and him spent the night
watching a lightening storm. You explain to
Jim how easy it will be for his family and how
difficult it is bound to be for yours. Jim moves
to Black Hawk to go to school and soon you
learn that his father has gotten you a job with

home in order to play dress up, chrades, and
other games with you. You tell a story about a
man who committed suicide. Soon you hear
that d’Arnault is playing a piano concert. Lena

    other room during the concert.

 Twenty years go by and during that time you
meet Cuzak, another Bohemian. You two
become close and get married and have
many children. You help Cuzak not be
homesick. After telling Jim all that has
happened, he requests to sleep with your
sons in the barn. Jim leaves and you say your
goodbyes ready to continue your happy life
with Cuzak, Jim, and your children.
 Antonia begins as a girl lost in the new country.
Gradually she becomes the independent girl that
the reader sees at the end of the novel. She is
forced to face so much hardship after the death
of her father. She must work as a servant girl,
but through this she gains a love for her social
life. Antonia always tries to make the best of her
circumstances especially when her first husband
runs away to Mexico. She never sacrifices her
independence and finishes her life happily on
the farm with Cuzak and her many children.
Quotation Number One
The writing style during the farm life portion of the novel was
very nostalgic. It recalled memories with great description,
especially in the passages about nature. The main themes in
this section had to do with how much the narrator missed
  home.
                      Quotation Number One

                      Quotation Number Two

                     Quotation Number Three
“Optima dies prima fugit” (the best days are the first to flee) was the
main theme of this section of the novel. The style shows the
narrator attempting to adapt to the new city life that he has taken.
However, several times during this section he recalls on his
memories from the farm. The narrator is not nearly as descriptive
in this section, but more of it is used to attack the social divisions
  of the city.
                         Quotation Number One

                         Quotation Number Two

                        Quotation Number Three
The outlook in this section is more mature, mostly because it is
the portion of the novel where the narrator knows
  everything that had happened.
                      Quotation Number One

                      Quotation Number Two

                      Quotation Number Three
“Even while we whispered about it, our vision disappeared, the
ball dropped and dropped until the red tip went beneath the
earth. The fields below us were dark, the sky was growing
pale, and forgotten plow had sunk back into it’s own
  littleness somewhere on the prairie”

Farm Life Present Day City Life
“More than any other person we remembered, this girl seemed
to mean to us the country, the conditions, the whole
adventure of our childhood. To speak her name was to call up
pictures of people and places, to set a quiet drama going in
  one’s brain. “

Farm Life Present Day City Life
“The red of the grass made all the great prairie the color of
wine stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first
washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole
country seemed, somehow, to be running.”

Farm Life Present Day City Life

  • 73. The writing style during the farm life portion of the novel was very nostalgic. It recalled memories with great description, especially in the passages about nature. The main themes in this section had to do with how much the narrator missed home. Quotation Number One Quotation Number Two Quotation Number Three
  • 74. “Optima dies prima fugit” (the best days are the first to flee) was the main theme of this section of the novel. The style shows the narrator attempting to adapt to the new city life that he has taken. However, several times during this section he recalls on his memories from the farm. • 78. “The red of the grass made all the great prairie the color of wine stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running.” Farm Life Present Day City Life
