3. What‟s third cinema ?
• Third Cinema is a Latin American film
movement that started in the 1960s-70s
which decries neocolonialism, the
capitalist system, and the Hollywood
model of cinema as mere entertainment
to make money.
• Third Cinema started with a quote by
anti-colonialist writer Frantz Fanon: "...we
must discuss, we must invent..."

4. The goals of 3rd cinema
• Third Cinema questions structures of power, particularly
colonialism and its legacies.
• aims for liberation of the oppressed.
• engages questions of identity and community.
• opens a dialogue with history to challenge previously held
conceptions of the past.
• challenges viewers to reflect on by the experience of
poverty and subordination.
• facilitates interaction among intellectuals and the masses.
