Using a magnetic compass (always points North), a known starting point ( a port or known land mark), calculations for distance time and speed, measurements were taken and charted on a chart with pin-pricks. The pin-pricks were joined together to form the course taken. The last pin-prick charted was the starting point for the next day’s course.

11. The Santa Maria Columbus’ favorite, it was the Flag ship. It was a Nao - a tub, big and awkward, and couldn’t go near the coastline. It was slow but could carry a lot of cargo, and stand up to heavy storms.
