Leukemia

YOSELIN SALAZAR
What is
leukemia ?
Leukemia is a type of
cancer that affects the
blood and bone
marrow, the spongy
center of bones where
our blood cells are
formed. The disease
develops when blood
cells produced in the
bone marrow grow out
of control.
What are the causes for leukemia ?

 Experts say that different leukemia's have different
    causes.
 Artificial ionizing radiation.
 Viruses - HTLV-1 (human T-lymphotropic virus) and HIV
    (human immunodeficiency virus) .
 Benzene and some petrochemicals.
 Alkylating chemotherapy agents used in previous cancers.
 Maternal fetal transmission (rare) .
 Hair dyes.
 Down syndrome.
 Electromagnetic energy.
 Genetic predisposition
There are mainly four types of
                   leukemia's.
                  Witch are :
                  Acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
What are some
common types Acute lymphoblastic leukemia
of leukemia's ? (ALL).

                  Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) .

                  Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
                   (CLL) .
Symptoms of leukemia.

Symptoms of leukemia depend on how much the cancer has grown
  and may include :
 Fevers and night sweats.
 Frequent or unusual infections.
 Weakness and fatigue.
 Headaches.
 Bruising of the skin and bleeding from the gums or rectum.
 Bone pain.
 Joint pain.
 Swelling in the belly or pain on the left side of the belly or in the left
  shoulder from a swollen spleen.
 Swollen lymph nodes in the armpit, neck, or groin.
 Decreased appetite and weight loss because you feel full and don't
  want to eat.
Can leukemia be prevented ?

Unfortunately, most cases of leukemia cannot be
prevented. We have yet to identify real, known
causes and risk factors for leukemia, so preventing
leukemia is not really possible at this time.
Researchers have identified a few risk factors for
certain types of leukemia:
 Cigarette smoking.
 Exposure to benzene.
 Previous chemotherapy or radiation
treatment.
 It all depends what kind of leukemia you
have. Many people with leukemia are treated
                with chemotherapy. Chemotherapy uses
                drugs to destroy leukemia cells.
            o some examples :
How is o By mouth.
leukemia • Into a vein.
treated ? • Through a catheter (a thin, flexible
                tube).
            • Into the cerebrospinal fluid.
            • Into the spinal fluid.
            • Under the scalp.
            • Blood cells.
            • Cells in hair roots.
            • Sperm or egg cells. Etc.
            •
Facts about leukemia.

 Most patients with leukemia are treated with
chemotherapy. Some patients also may have radiation
    therapy and/or bone marrow transplantation.
 Leukemia is a cancer of the blood cells.
 While the exact cause(s) of leukemia is not known, risk
    factors have been identified.
 There is no known way to prevent leukemia.
 The prognosis of leukemia depends upon several factors,
including the patient's age, the type of leukemia, and the
extent to which the cancer has spread.
