Introduction
 “A reality show is a television program in which
ordinary people are continously filmed, designed to
be entertaining rather than informative”.
‘‘A reality show is a telecast of a performance or
activity of one or more persons, who may be expert
or non-expert of that respective field in an
unpredictable environment & in unscripted manner’’.
History
 Allen Funt’s “Candid Camera” was the first radio
reality show.
 “Queen for a Day” (1945-1964) was an early
example of reality-based television.
 “Beat the Clock” and “Truth or Consequences”
were game shows(1950) that involve wacky
competitions, stunts & jokes.
 “Confession” was a crime/police show(1958-1959),
with interviewer Jack Wyatt questioning criminals
from assorted backgrounds.

Type of reality shows
 Documentary style— Participants do their daily personal and
professional activities. Examples: COPS ,How The Universe Work.
 Elimination/game shows— Participants compete to win a prize,
sometimes while living together. Example: Roadies,Road Rules.
 Self improvement— A person or group of people try to improve
themselves or their lives. Examples: Extreme Makeover,
The Biggest Loser.
 Dating shows—People go on a date . Dating shows have new people
each episode. Example: Blind Date.
 Talk shows—A host interviews people, often about strange or
outrageous topics that will cause conflict on-screen. Examples: “
Coffee With Karan”,“The Anupam Kher Show”.
 Hidden cameras—A hidden camera records random people in a
staged situation. The situations are often meant to confuse, amuse or
scare the person. Example: Blind Date.
 Stand-Up Comedy—In this one or more person make people laugh.
Example: Comedy Night With Kapil.
Reality Shows In World
As we know that the Reality Show Was started out of India
first so there are a lot of reality shows in the world that are
very famous. Some of them are:

between two or more "tribes”.
 Physical challenges are used to pit
the teams against each other for

 They must vote off one of their

 After remaining half merged into a
single tribe.

American Idol
 Is an American singing
competition.
 Created by Simon Fuller.
 Produced by 19 Entertainment.
 The show debuted in 2001 in
Britain.
 Was Based on Pop Idol(British).
 Judges select singers by audition.
 Telephone voting was also used.
 Only in 13th
Season contestants
were permitted to perform songs
written by themselves.
 Caleb Johnson was the winner of
the season
The Big Bang Theory
 Is a Sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady.
 Premiered on CBS on September 24, 2007.
 Last season premiered on September 26, 2013.
 Primarily centered on five characters living in California.
 Much of the show focused on science, particularly physics.
 Male characters are employed at Caltech & have science-related Job.
 They banter about scientific theories or news and make science-related
jokes in the show.
Reality Shows In India
Indian Television would be considered incomplete without a
pinch of reality shows in it. Earlier television was more of
fiction shows as compared to reality shows. But now a day, TV
is more of reality shows as per audiences demand . Some of

Bachchan as his first appearance
on Indian television
 Third season was hosted by
Shahrukh Khan.

Bigg Boss
 is a reality TV programme broadcast
in India started in 2007 .
 It follows the Big Brother format,
which was first developed by John
Demol.
 A number of contestants live in a
purpose-build house and are isolated
from the rest of the world.
 Each week, housemates nominate
two of their peers for eviction, and
the housemates who receives the
most nominations would face a public
vote out.

How Real These Shows Are
 All the shows are scripted and edited as per the
reaction & rating of the audience.
 Only the edited part is shown to us.
 As a research on “The Survivor” for one episode
shooting is done for 8 hours per day but the episode is
only for 44 min a week.
 Even people vote for their favorite contestants , but the
elimination is done on the base of TRP of the show.
 In “Jhalak Dikhla Ja” ‘Kiku’ is male but participating as
a female candidate and also not eliminated, even not a
good dancer compared to the others.
 In the “Comedy Nights With Kapil” all the questions
are told to audience, that they have to ask.
Effect On Youngsters & Students
There are bad effects as well as benefits also of reality
shows.
Bad Effects Are:
People go crazy for the audition of these reality shows.
On average, teen is watching tv. for 28 hours per week.
Teens are getting exposed to things like drugs and vulgar
language at younger ages.
Sometimes beyond the ethics of human culture.
People also learn the ways to do a crime.
Benefits Of Reality Shows
Gives platform to talented guys.
Increasing the dimension of ideas for viewers.
Motivates also.
Coining the money.
Increasing the popularity of celebrities or persons.
Increase knowledge also.
One can earn fame and money in a short time.

Introduction  “A reality show is a television program in which ordinary people are continously filmed, designed to be entertaining rather than informative”. ‘‘A reality show is a telecast of a performance or activity of one or more persons, who may be expert or non-expert of that respective field in an unpredictable environment & in unscripted manner’’.
  • 5. History  Allen Funt’s “Candid Camera” was the first radio reality show.  “Queen for a Day” (1945-1964) was an early example of reality-based television.  “Beat the Clock” and “Truth or Consequences” were game shows(1950) that involve wacky competitions, stunts & jokes.  “Confession” was a crime/police show(1958-1959), with interviewer Jack Wyatt questioning criminals from assorted backgrounds.

  • 7. Type of reality shows  Documentary style— Participants do their daily personal and professional activities. Examples: COPS ,How The Universe Work.  Elimination/game shows— Participants compete to win a prize, sometimes while living together. Example: Roadies,Road Rules.  Self improvement— A person or group of people try to improve themselves or their lives. Examples: Extreme Makeover, The Biggest Loser.  Dating shows—People go on a date . Dating shows have new people each episode. Example: Blind Date.  Talk shows—A host interviews people, often about strange or outrageous topics that will cause conflict on-screen. Examples: “ Coffee With Karan”,“The Anupam Kher Show”.  Hidden cameras—A hidden camera records random people in a staged situation. The situations are often meant to confuse, amuse or scare the person. Example: Blind Date.  Stand-Up Comedy—In this one or more person make people laugh. Example: Comedy Night With Kapil.

Some of them are: Survivor (U.S.)(28 Seasons) American Idol(13 Seasons ) The Bing Bang Theory(7 Seasons) The Walking Dead(4 Seasons) Downtown Abbey(4 Seasons)  Big Brother(Brazil)(15 Season)

Survivor(U.S.)  Reality game show  Premiered on May 31, 2000, on CBS.  Hosted & Produced by Jeff Probst.  The first U.S. season followed format as the Swedish series.  Sixteen or more players are split between two or more "tribes”.  Physical challenges are used to pit the teams against each other for rewards.  They must vote off one of their players.  After remaining half merged into a single tribe.  Tony Vlachos was the winner of last season.

American Idol  Is an American singing competition.  Created by Simon Fuller.  Produced by 19 Entertainment.  The show debuted in 2001 in Britain.  Was Based on Pop Idol(British).  Judges select singers by audition.  Telephone voting was also used.  Only in 13th Season contestants were permitted to perform songs written by themselves.  Caleb Johnson was the winner of the season

The Big Bang Theory  Is a Sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady.  Premiered on CBS on September 24, 2007.  Last season premiered on September 26, 2013.  Primarily centered on five characters living in California.  Much of the show focused on science, particularly physics.  Male characters are employed at Caltech & have science-related Job.  They banter about scientific theories or news and make science-related jokes in the show.

But now a day, TV is more of reality shows as per audiences demand . Kaun Banega Crorepati  Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is an Indian television game show.  Based on the UK game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?  Won popularity all over the world.  Also won acclaim in UK, USA and Canada.  First season was premiered in 2000 hosted by Amitabh Bachchan as his first appearance on Indian television  Third season was hosted by Shahrukh Khan.  8th season is coming soon.

Bigg Boss  is a reality TV programme broadcast in India started in 2007 .  It follows the Big Brother format, which was first developed by John Demol.  A number of contestants live in a purpose-build house and are isolated from the rest of the world.  Each week, housemates nominate two of their peers for eviction, and the housemates who receives the most nominations would face a public vote out. MTV Roadies  MTV Roadies is a youth-based popular reality television show on MTV in India.  It is an Indian version of the show, Road Rules(1995).  Launched in 2000.  Show is sponsored by Viacom 18 & hosted by Cyrus Sahukar.  Hosted by Raghu Ram and Ranvijay Singh.  Completed XI successful seasons.  India's longest running reality show in the youth genre. How Real These Shows Are  All the shows are scripted and edited as per the reaction & rating of the audience.  Only the edited part is shown to us.  As a research on “The Survivor” for one episode shooting is done for 8 hours per day but the episode is only for 44 min a week.  Even people vote for their favorite contestants , but the elimination is done on the base of TRP of the show.  In “Jhalak Dikhla Ja” ‘Kiku’ is male but participating as a female candidate and also not eliminated, even not a good dancer compared to the others.  In the “Comedy Nights With Kapil” all the questions are told to audience, that they have to ask.
  • 20. Effect On Youngsters & Students There are bad effects as well as benefits also of reality shows. Bad Effects Are: People go crazy for the audition of these reality shows. On average, teen is watching tv. for 28 hours per week. Teens are getting exposed to things like drugs and vulgar language at younger ages. Sometimes beyond the ethics of human culture. People also learn the ways to do a crime.
  • 21. Benefits Of Reality Shows Gives platform to talented guys. Increasing the dimension of ideas for viewers. Motivates also. Coining the money. Increasing the popularity of celebrities or persons. Increase knowledge also. One can earn fame and money in a short time.
