READING COMPREHENSION 1
CHARLES CHAPLIN
He was believed to have been born on April 16, 1889. There is some doubtwhether
April 16 is actually his birthday, and it is possible he was not born in 1889. There is
also uncertainty about his birthplace: Londonor Fontainebleau, France. There is no
doubt, however, as to his parentage: he was born to Charles Chaplin, Sr. and Hannah
Harriette Hill (aka Lily Harley on stage), both Music Hall entertainers. His parents
separated soonafter his birth, leaving him in the care of his increasingly unstable
mother.
In 1896, Chaplin's mother was unable to find work; Charlie and his older half-brother
Sydney Chaplin had to be left in the workhouse at Lambeth, moving after several weeks
to Hanwell Schoolfor Orphans and Destitute Children. His father died an alcoholic
when Charlie was 12, and his mother suffered a mental breakdown, and was eventually
admitted temporarily to the Cane Hill Asylum at Coulsdon(near Croydon). She died in
1928 in the United States, two years after coming to the States to live with Chaplin, by
then a commercial success.
Charlie first took to the stage when, aged five, he performed in Music Hall in 1894,
standing in for his mother. As a child, he was confined to a bed for weeks due to a
serious illness, and, at night, his mother would sit at the window and act out what was
going on outside. In 1900, aged 11, his brother helped get him the role of a comic cat in
the pantomime Cinderella at the London Hippodrome. In 1903 he appeared in 'Jim, A
Romance of Cockayne', followed by his first regular job, as the newspaper boy Billy in
Sherlock Holmes, a part he played into 1906. This was followed by Casey's 'Court
Circus' variety show, and, the following year, he became a clown in Fred Karno's 'Fun
Factory' slapstick comedy company.
According to immigration records, he arrived in the United States with the Karno troupe
on October2, 1912. In the Karno Company was Arthur Stanley Jefferson, who would
later become known as Stan Laurel. Chaplin and Laurel shared a room in a boarding
house. Stan Laurel returned to England but Chaplin remained in the United States.
Chaplin's act was seen by film producerMack Sennett, who hired him for his studio, the
Keystone Film Company.

Reading Comprehension 2
Are we speaking the same body language?
A Many teenage boys and girls often find it difficult to know if they're giving the
correct signals to someone they fancy. However, a recent survey amongst UK teenagers
shows that there are some universal flirting techniques.
B The most important thing is appearance. Both boys and girls should pay attention to
what they are wearing. First impressions count when you want to ask someone out on a
date. Both boys and girls should try to look smart. Dirty fingernails and scruffy clothes
won't do anyone any favours. Try to wear something that makes you feel comfortable.
If you feel relaxed, you'll be more confident.
C Once you've made the right impressions you can try to attract the love of your life's
attention. If you're a boy, it's good to make eye contact with the girl you are interested
in. Experts in bodylanguage sometimes refer to this as the 'eyebrow flash'. Catch her
eye, look directly at her and raise your eyebrows. If she likes you, she'll smile back.
Girls can find it useful to smile back and then mirror the boy's bodylanguage. We all
like people who look and act like us. lt makes us feel more secure.
D And what's next? As a boy, it's always good to pay a compliment to the girl you
fancy, and as a girl, you can accept his compliment and pay him one back. Once you've
got through that, then you can begin to talk to each other. Remember not to sound too
nervous, don't giggle and keep smiling. Always look interested in what the other person
is saying, even if you know nothing about it. After this, you can see how you really feel
and decide if you want to go out with the person or not!

A LOOK AT LUCK
1
Once there was a man who constantly said, “I’m so unlucky! I never win the lottery!”
Finally, tired of his complaining, his wife said, “Maybe your luck would improve if you
bought a lottery ticket.”
2
This old joke sums up what psychologist Richard Wiseman found when researching
luck – some people wait for luck to come their way, while others know that they must
do something to be lucky. Many of us view luck or misfortune as the result of chance,
or random occurrences. Of course, in some respects, this is absolutely correct – consider
things like being born into a particular family or being hit by a car while standing on the
pavement.
3
But chance alone does not explain all aspects ofluck, as Wiseman found when he
scientifically researched the conceptof luck. Four hundred volunteers, aged 18 to 84,
who defined themselves as exceptionally lucky or unlucky, participated in the search
project, which included interviews, personality and intelligence tests, and experiments.
4
In one experiment, the volunteers were asked to count photographs in a newspaper. The
self-defined “unlucky” people spent about two minutes doing the task. Thosewho
called themselves “lucky” stopped counting almost immediately – when they saw
a distinct message on page two that said, “Stop counting – there are 43 photographs.”
The unlucky people missed it becausethey were too focused on counting the photos to
notice anything else.
5
From this and other data, Wiseman concluded that the way self-defined “lucky” people
behave and think “makes them far more likely than others to create, notice and act upon
chance opportunities in their lives.” He also found that lucky people have got more
positive expectations than those who are unlucky, and to moreover, even feel lucky that
any bad luck they’ve experienced wasn’t as bad as it could have been. As Wiseman
says in his book The Luck Factor, “Being in the right place at the right time is actually
all about being in the right state of mind.”

  • 9. REVIEW ACTIVITIES 4º ESO Centro Concertado Bilingüe READING COMPREHENSION 1 CHARLES CHAPLIN He was believed to have been born on April 16, 1889. There is some doubtwhether April 16 is actually his birthday, and it is possible he was not born in 1889. There is also uncertainty about his birthplace: Londonor Fontainebleau, France. There is no doubt, however, as to his parentage: he was born to Charles Chaplin, Sr. and Hannah Harriette Hill (aka Lily Harley on stage), both Music Hall entertainers. His parents separated soonafter his birth, leaving him in the care of his increasingly unstable mother. In 1896, Chaplin's mother was unable to find work; Charlie and his older half-brother Sydney Chaplin had to be left in the workhouse at Lambeth, moving after several weeks to Hanwell Schoolfor Orphans and Destitute Children. His father died an alcoholic when Charlie was 12, and his mother suffered a mental breakdown, and was eventually admitted temporarily to the Cane Hill Asylum at Coulsdon(near Croydon). She died in 1928 in the United States, two years after coming to the States to live with Chaplin, by then a commercial success. Charlie first took to the stage when, aged five, he performed in Music Hall in 1894, standing in for his mother. As a child, he was confined to a bed for weeks due to a serious illness, and, at night, his mother would sit at the window and act out what was going on outside. In 1900, aged 11, his brother helped get him the role of a comic cat in the pantomime Cinderella at the London Hippodrome. In 1903 he appeared in 'Jim, A Romance of Cockayne', followed by his first regular job, as the newspaper boy Billy in Sherlock Holmes, a part he played into 1906. This was followed by Casey's 'Court Circus' variety show, and, the following year, he became a clown in Fred Karno's 'Fun Factory' slapstick comedy company. According to immigration records, he arrived in the United States with the Karno troupe on October2, 1912. In the Karno Company was Arthur Stanley Jefferson, who would later become known as Stan Laurel. Chaplin and Laurel shared a room in a boarding house. Stan Laurel returned to England but Chaplin remained in the United States. Chaplin's act was seen by film producerMack Sennett, who hired him for his studio, the Keystone Film Company.

  • 11. REVIEW ACTIVITIES 4º ESO Centro Concertado Bilingüe Reading Comprehension 2 Are we speaking the same body language? A Many teenage boys and girls often find it difficult to know if they're giving the correct signals to someone they fancy. However, a recent survey amongst UK teenagers shows that there are some universal flirting techniques. B The most important thing is appearance. Both boys and girls should pay attention to what they are wearing. First impressions count when you want to ask someone out on a date. Both boys and girls should try to look smart. Dirty fingernails and scruffy clothes won't do anyone any favours. Try to wear something that makes you feel comfortable. If you feel relaxed, you'll be more confident. C Once you've made the right impressions you can try to attract the love of your life's attention. If you're a boy, it's good to make eye contact with the girl you are interested in. Experts in bodylanguage sometimes refer to this as the 'eyebrow flash'. Catch her eye, look directly at her and raise your eyebrows. If she likes you, she'll smile back. Girls can find it useful to smile back and then mirror the boy's bodylanguage. We all like people who look and act like us. lt makes us feel more secure. D And what's next? As a boy, it's always good to pay a compliment to the girl you fancy, and as a girl, you can accept his compliment and pay him one back. Once you've got through that, then you can begin to talk to each other. Remember not to sound too nervous, don't giggle and keep smiling. Always look interested in what the other person is saying, even if you know nothing about it. After this, you can see how you really feel and decide if you want to go out with the person or not!

  • 14. REVIEW ACTIVITIES 4º ESO Centro Concertado Bilingüe Reading Comprehension3 Read the text and answer the questions that follow. A LOOK AT LUCK 1 Once there was a man who constantly said, “I’m so unlucky! I never win the lottery!” Finally, tired of his complaining, his wife said, “Maybe your luck would improve if you bought a lottery ticket.” 2 This old joke sums up what psychologist Richard Wiseman found when researching luck – some people wait for luck to come their way, while others know that they must do something to be lucky. Many of us view luck or misfortune as the result of chance, or random occurrences. Of course, in some respects, this is absolutely correct – consider things like being born into a particular family or being hit by a car while standing on the pavement. 3 But chance alone does not explain all aspects ofluck, as Wiseman found when he scientifically researched the conceptof luck. Four hundred volunteers, aged 18 to 84, who defined themselves as exceptionally lucky or unlucky, participated in the search project, which included interviews, personality and intelligence tests, and experiments. 4 In one experiment, the volunteers were asked to count photographs in a newspaper. The self-defined “unlucky” people spent about two minutes doing the task. Thosewho called themselves “lucky” stopped counting almost immediately – when they saw a distinct message on page two that said, “Stop counting – there are 43 photographs.” The unlucky people missed it becausethey were too focused on counting the photos to notice anything else. 5 From this and other data, Wiseman concluded that the way self-defined “lucky” people behave and think “makes them far more likely than others to create, notice and act upon chance opportunities in their lives.” He also found that lucky people have got more positive expectations than those who are unlucky, and to moreover, even feel lucky that any bad luck they’ve experienced wasn’t as bad as it could have been. As Wiseman says in his book The Luck Factor, “Being in the right place at the right time is actually all about being in the right state of mind.”
