The Thylacine, or Tasmanian Tiger, came into conflict with British settlers in Tasmania after they began killing sheep. As farmers shot Thylacines to protect their livestock, tiger hunting became a popular sport. Thylacines lived in many habitats across Tasmania and were well camouflaged, making them rare to see. Although believed extinct, some officials hoped sightings meant a colony still survived for a time. The last known Thylacine died when a falling tree landed on its stomach in a zoo where people had teased the tigers. While the Thylacine is now considered extinct, some maintain hope they could still be found.
