Budget cuts- means that collaboration was vitalPotentially we’re seeing the model of ‘collaborate to compete’ i.e. By working together in small clusters regionally- more able to increase value proposition of individual institutionKeynsian- ‘invest to save’Be clear about what you want- strategy, engagement (internally and externally), strategy and potentially change management, maximising kudos/ uniqueness
Collaboration as a mean to create Agora for public content: open "place of assembly"Change of Mind set amongst policy makers- started by last government but being continued by the coalition: Free government data- data.gov.ukDigital inclusion- race online 2012- branded under ‘Big society’ these daysVery excitingly though- digital world through TV: YouView. YouView is a coalition including the five main TV channels and Internet service providers to create a standard platform for TV delivered through your broadband pipes so that free-to-air internet-connected TV service to UK homes next year through set-top boxesSally Potter (celebrated UK film-maker) archive ‘opened up’ for for innovative teaching and learning: video browsing to see video frame by frame and link to production notes. But also to link with work in progress."The SP-ARK vision of social learning gives us a glimmer of the future today. Instead of locking archive materials away and restricting availability, it promises ready access to anybody anywhere with a computer and the internet.” Dr. Chris Berry, Professor of Film and Television Studies, Goldsmiths CollegeOther examples: DV8DGrowing Knowledge exhibition
However, in order for partnerships to work there need to be mutual benefit- PPP model- needs to be fair and ethical on both sides - Membership model- value is commersurate non-financial rewardsRewards, not always financial- but of high strategic priority or tapping a gap in the market.Ideal if goals trying to achieve are essential at a strategy level to both orgs, if the orgs involved are the only players that can make work and equally matched in terms of resource and committment.Always a ‘first amongst equals’- what does each bring to the party NB- doesn’t have to be digital, physical engagement can be just as important Questions to ask yourself: Is there a user need?policy on ‘open’ (more usage) or commercial?? IPRRevenue vs profitInternational dimensionIf you’ve asked these questions, has your partner?
Be bold, be positive and creative- nothing kills a project like stagnation
