 Studying the sport as a social phenomenon.
 Linking it to other social concepts:

 Studying sociology of sport started in 1970’s.

4. WHAT IS SOCIOLOGY?
 The pioneer: Auguste Comte (Francia)
 Objective: apply scientific method to social phenomenons.
 1838 the term "sociology” was created.
 Sociology investigates:
 Structure
 Processes of human society
 Nature
 Examples:
 Opinion polls.
 Habits of consumption.
 etc.

6. FUNCTIONAL SOCIOLOGY
 Sport allow the building of national and personal
identities.
 Allows one to channel agressiveness in a positive way.

7. MARXIST SOCIOLOGY
 Sport emerged during the Industrial Revolution.
 Sport emanated capitalist views.

8. FIGURATIVE SOCIOLOGY
 Study long term (evolution of human behaviour).
 The more refined societies also have more refined
sporting structures.
 Sport is much more than simply practice. Rather, it’s a
key to the modernization of society.

9. STRUCTURALIST SOCIOLOGY
 Global overview of sports.
 Linking sport with the social structures.
 Time & money spent practicing sport, freetime...
 Social class influences sport preferences.
 Family and social relantionships have influence.

10. INTERACCIONIST SOCIOLOGY
 Diference between :
 Association: we can be members.
 Institution: we’re subject to their power.
 Organitzation: excutive control of behaviourial conduct
designed by the Institution.
 These 3 concepts have to be framed in every case study.
