Spectrum Accelerate Overview
 XIV software stack in a Virtual Machine (VM)
• ESXi 5.5 hypervisor, non-cluster, per server
 The SW aggregates locally-attached HDD storage into a
consolidated storage grid:
• Data is spread across all nodes and all HDDs in the grid using the
XIV Gen3 proven data distribution
• Each 1MB piece of data is mirrored on two different nodes for
data protection
• No server RAID, data is protected by the XIV algorithms
• SSD and RAM used as cache for performance
• Supports XIV features available in 11.5.0 release
• Managed through XIV GUI and Hyper-Scale Manager
 Additional considerations
• Today: 1xServer -> 1xHypervisor (ESX) -> 1xXIV-VM
• 10GbE iSCSI for interconnect and host connectivity
• All nodes act as interface nodes

ESXi Host Server Requirements
 At least 3 (up to 15) ESXi 5.5 host servers should be pre-configured with:
• Six to twelve like capacity HDD’s for Spectrum Accelerate use plus an additional HDD that contains
one datastore with a minimum of 250 GB of free formatted space for storing the Spectrum
Accelerate image
• CPU with at least 4 physical cores
• At least 32GB of RAM
• Any RAID function of the disk controller should be disabled (all HDDs should work in JBOD mode)
• A public IP address for management
• One or two public IP addresses for iSCSI connectivity
• SSH access enabled (can be disabled after the deployment is completed)
• One, two or three vSwitches with corresponding port groups defined to support the management,
interconnect, and iSCSI networks
– Note: as a best practice, the same port group names should be predefined on all XIV designated
ESXi hosts
• Interconnect network must match the bandwidth of the iSCSI network (10 GigE)
– Consist of a dedicated broadcast domain, which can be implemented using a private VLAN that
includes:
– Two private subnets (IP range examples 172.16-31.x.x or 192.168.0-254.x)
– End-to-end MTU setting of 9000 if 10 GigE is used
 ESXi hosts can be connected to a vCenter server, although it is not a requirement
• If a vCenter server is used, Spectrum Accelerate and disk resources can be visually monitored through
vSphere Client
 A single VM will be created for each Spectrum Accelerate node
