Someone recommended this book, a year or so ago, and I bought it because I liked the review
that was forwarded to me. However, for some reason I couldn’t get past the first chapter and that
too I had read in pieces. I don’t know why instead of finishing the book I, after four months of

Review:
Instead of jumping straight into explaining the ‘7 habits’ Mr. Covey shares a personal story,
something worth paying attention to. By means of, his and his wife’s experience with their son,
he explains how parents fall in the ‘societal trap’ of wanting their kids to be perfect individuals
praised by one and all. Not thinking about helping their chidnre develop their unique character
and qualities. As every child is different, parents should treat him accordingly, instead of forcing
the child to be someone he’s not. To achieve this goal, parents need to reset the ‘their
conditioning,’ we have been programmed to follow, to be accepted and be part of the society.
After the amazing introduction, the author explains the first habit “to be proactive.” Being
proactive is all about understanding that you are the only one responsible for all your actions or
reactions to certain situations/people in your life at all times. The word reaction, as the author
explains, is similar to negative action. And your goal should always be, to consciously choose
your response in every situation possible. You should not allow people (family, friends, enemies
etc.) in our lives or the outside influences, to decide ‘how you feel or how you act at any given
time.’

3. What’s Not Sizzling
Mentioning religion and stating how the principles are common to all major religions of the
world. Equating ‘common sense’ with ‘natural laws’ when not busy calling them ‘religious
laws.’ Whenever, the author mentions ‘natural laws’ I couldn’t stop thinking about laws like the
survival of the fittest, fight or flight etc. I thought they were real natural laws that we, humans
disregard in favor of civilization. See More.
Outcome
Inspiring read, definitely worth investing time in. The book not only teaches how to be more
productive in professional life but shares some good suggestions on how to manage personal life
too.
