According to crime statistics from 2008-2014 in Maryland, violent crimes decreased from a high of 13,114 in 2008 to 10,454 in 2012 while property crimes decreased from 38,462 in 2008 to 31,849 in 2012. While the author notes the numbers are still high, they are surprised the rates decreased rather than increased as they expected. The author is interested to see more recent statistics and believes the downward trends indicate law enforcement is effective, the criminal justice system is working, and the state is complying more with laws.

Classmates,After reviewing the 2008-2014 crime statistics for Maryland, I am a little
surprised. However, I am not surprised in a good way. I would have thought that there were
more accounts of crime than there actually are. In 2008, violent crimes were at a high at
13,114. By the time it reached 2012, it largely decreased to 10,454. Property crimes in 2008,
however, were standing at 38,462! By the time it got to 2012, these crimes decreased to
31,849. These numbers are still high; however, I did intend for them to be a little higher and
certainly not decreasing. I am eager to see what 2015 to present statistics look like! I believe
that these statistics tell us that our law enforcement are doing a good job, our criminal
justice system is working, and our state, overall, is starting to comply more with the laws!
