44. Spoken Word Poetry
an ANTHROPOLOGICAL search for meaning
In this presentation I will be looking at the roots of
spoken word poetry in Toronto, and in Canada in general.
The key ethnographic issues I will discuss will include:
•The African griot* roots of dub and spoken word
•Spoken word and rap, what’s the same?
•Is spoken word poetry being appropriate
•The slavery tradition and North American oral poetry
•Spoken word and the oral tradition historically
Everybody’s got a story that’ll break your heart.
