1) Welcome- 2) Outline of today’s talk: Introduce GWC and the land trust community in the Great Lakes basin 3) Introduce GWC , and organization that does many things, but fundamentally, we help people protect the places that make Wisconsin special.
We do that by strengthening Wisconsin’s Land Trusts. Not all important conservation land is publicly owned. Land trusts are non-profit organizations working in local communities to accomplish conservation on private lands. The best known land trust is the Nature Conservancy, working internationally. Here in Wisconsin, including our Nature Conservancy Chapter, there are over 50 land trusts. Some work over several counties (The NEWLT) Some work to protect a particular watershed (The Kinnickinnick River Land Trust) Some define their mission to protect specific ecosystem (the Prairie Enthusiasts) [mike, not sure how much you want to say about land trusts…options include: What do land trusts do ? Provide willing landowners with options for conserving their land Match grant and loan dollars with private donations, doubling available funding for conservation Partner with local governments to create nature preserves, educational centers, urban green space Work with schools, clubs and associations on habitat restoration, land management and species inventories permanently protect land.] At Gathering Waters, we strengthen Wisconsin’s land trusts by connecting them to resources knowledge they need to protect forever the undeveloped natural treasures in their own communities. LMSA is one example of these programs. In general, we do that through three broadly defined programs… Direct services/training Policy Advocacy Public Education/Outreach
LMSA is a collaboration of non-profit Wisconsin conservation organizations focused on building organizational capacity to accelerate the protection of significant land and water resources in the Lake Michigan basin.
11 total partners, including GWC Map is from the 2003 Landscapes of Opportunity document.

In fall last year, four community forums brought together more than 450 local business owners, government officials, community leaders, landowners and other citizens to tackle the complex challenges facing the watershed. Wingspread: discussions on the future of LMSA and an update to the Landscapes of Opportunity
The Trust for Public Lands’ model End goals: 1. Develop a regional conservation plan. 2. Targeted and efficient conservation by land trusts .
